Hi, first flight lhr to faro this morning was cancelled, assume due to weather. Rebooked onto afternoon flight, scheduled departure 15.10. Original airframe developed a technical problem, standby plane and crew dispatched, new plane also then developed a technical issue. This was eventually fixed within 1-2 hours, but then due to air traffic control queue and runaway switch over, departure was delayed. Then due to weather and available routing the flight was cancelled. Later departures from LHR and LGW were able to take off. Is this a UK261 eligible delay, or will extraordinary circumstances apply. Paging JDB (again).
Did they say what the problem was with the routing?

something to do with headwinds, making the flight longer and possibly pushing operating limits for crew. A flight departed Gatwick after ours had been cancelled
@ed_fly – it’s complicated! Firstly the original cancelled flight and the subsequently rebooked then cancelled one are entirely separate. In theory you could claim cancellation compensation for both.
When there is a delay/cancellation for compound reasons that have elements of compensation eligibility, you should probably claim, see what BA’s response is and then ask again. They may surprise by paying up, they may hang themselves with a stupid response or they may obfuscate. It’s not worth hypothesising about what might have happened had the technical fault(s) not occurred as neither CEDR or a court will get into that. It’s also not relevant what other flights were or weren’t flying as when there is weather related ATC disruption, airlines are free to choose which flights to cancel or operate to meet the reduced flow requirement.
I would start by claiming for the second flight without elaborating on any of the details. You can consider claiming for the original flight as well, but maybe keep that in reserve for now.
You don’t say what your plans are now, but if you have been rebooked again, you are entitled to accommodation, food and extra transportation costs to/from any hotel until they get you on a flight.

thanks for the advice, will try a claim for the 2nd cancellation and report back. Hopefully on my way from Gatwick in a few mins! Hotel and incidentals expenses will be sent to BA shortly as well.
Thought I’d return to say that Ba has agreed my claim, and payment appears pending in my account. Was expecting a battle, but they agreed without any fuss.
Didn’t include any additional information on the claim, just the flight numbers and passengers etc. As above thanks for the advice provided.
