Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Should I fly Club World or First Class from London to New York?

Hi, I am looking to book a redemption flight to New York with a companion voucher for boxing day. Is it worth the extra points in first?

My experience is that it is if:
    – you want to take extra passengers into the flounge that otherwise wouldn’t get in
    – you have never flown first
    – you will get to fully experience the flounge ie not a early morning flight
    – you have lots of avios

Only flown First once and loved the experience. Flying out to JFK in Club Suite on 31/12. Its an early flight and just two of us so happy to dave the extra avios.

With a companion voucher, you’re looking at an extra 18-20,000 Avios in each direction for you and your partner. Valuing Avios at 1p, that’s about £100 each, in each direction. In my view, you’d be mad not to take it.

I’ve never flown in the new Club Suite, but I have walked through that cabin on the way to First. Club Suite looks very pleasant, but it isn’t a patch on First. This is why I’d go First:

    – Much better ground experience – the First Wing and, particularly, the Concorde Room are a massive step up from the Club check-in desks and lounge.
    – Much smaller cabin (normally just 8 seats) with very personal service.
    – On most aircraft, the opportunity to ‘buddy-dine’, where your seat turns into a dinner table for two.
    – Food of genuinely restaurant quality both in the air and on the ground.
    – Considerably more spacious seat.
    – First off the aircraft to reduce any delays at immigration.

Personally, I would stick with club suite on the JFK route. High chance of getting it but still not guarenteed. I would save the First redemption for longer sectors like west coast and Asia where you can enjoy the onboard experience to its fullest.

At the moment with possible minimum crewing I would say go for it, CCR for breakfast, then the flight (get your PJ’s for the flight back etc).

    Enjoy

Also if you don’t have status you get free seat selection in F

Great, thanks for the input I’m going to go for f. Do any of you know how I am able to include a connecting flight from NCL with a first redemption flight, it keeps saying there is no availability but there is when booking business. Cheers

    Good choice.

I would call You First to book if you are having difficulty. The phones are normally answered immediately – another benefit of First.

I forgot the other, absolutely mahoosive benefit of First: you will earn more brownie points from your partner than I can begin to describe.

Fine if you’re not the person stuck in the corner with no ability to get out. Not knocking BA First, but this particular feature is fun the first time then IMO too uncomfortable to bother doing again.

@dst87 I guess it depends on the individual and how large they are. It’s worked for my wife and me many times and we look forward to it.

I also value the footstool doubling up as a second seat when not eating; it’s great to be able to have a comfortable face-to-face conversation in the air. I’m a normal sized bloke, and I can comfortably sit on the footstool for an hour or two provided it’s a window seat as these have more shoulder room.

That went relatively well, all booked. Is there a way to find out which first seat is on the plane?

I can’t speak directly as I haven’t sat in that position, but my husband did and he’s a pretty skinny guy. It was a window seat seat (2A, I think). I definitely enjoyed it as the person on the proper seat… my husband said he wouldn’t be too keen to do it again and found it cramped and claustrophobic. I did like the novelty of it though, so if the other person is comfortable then great!

Go to MMB on the BA website and select your seat.

If you mean to find out which type of seat, then look at manage my booking and select view or change seat to see the seat plan. You can work it out from there – if there are 8 seats it’s the new layout, if there are 14 or so, it’s the older fit.

In the end, the biggest difference will be down to the crew – get a good one and the hard product doesn’t matter. Enjoy.

I like First out to JFK and Club back. Such a short, and overnight, flight on way back- the club suite is perfect for that. Although the CCR at JFK is worth a visit if you’ve not been before.

That is unless connecting on after arriving back in LHR. Travelling first and having use of the CCR at both JFK and LHR is very useful.

I decided to ignore my own advice and listen to the collective wisdom 🙂
Just upgraded a 241 booking from CW to First using 20000 avios – no change fee – on the 9.50am flight New Years Eve. Decided that it was a small avios loss for the experience.
Lets just hope it all goes ahead !
