Hi all
I’m attempting to check-in tomorrow for a flight to a Spanish island and getting the error ‘Sorry, something went wrong. Please reload the page and try again’ after selecting passengers (just myself) during the check-in process. I have already checked in other family members (on a separate booking) for the same flight with no issues. I tried multiple times across different browsers. We are all booked in club Europe.
Having phoned BA they are saying that ‘my travel certificate needs checking at the airport.’ They are telling me this is not a passport check but something to do with vaccinations. Clearly this is rubbish as there are no vaccinations required for UK citizens travel to Spain.
I’m guessing this is because the Club Europe cabin has been overbooked and they are planning to downgrade me. I noticed during check-in of other passengers there were no other seats showing on seat selection. They have told me this is not the case but it seems most likely. I’m concerned mostly as I need to be on the same flight as my family. The downgrade wouldn’t be the end of the world, but being put on a different flight would be massively problematic. Any thoughts or similar experiences?
Thanks
I’d be less worried about a CE flight, as they can move the curtain forwards and backwards to suit how many CE seats they need. How many is it showing on the seat map, if you are able to look?
I don’t get as far as the seat map during check-in, but when I checked in two other family members, there were no other seats showing as available. If you mean rows…I think there were seven or eight rows showing. Thanks!
Not being able to check in is an occasional hazard, doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem.
What flight number?
We have exactly the same issue on BA2711 tomorrow. I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m back on the forum tomorrow asking for advice on downgrade compensation!
BA2711 tomorrow has six tickets available and currently seven unallocated seats in CE, so you shouldn’t have any problems there.

Thanks AndrewT, where did you find that information?
Yup, downgraded. They suggested I should have linked though bookings – though that may have just meant we all got downgraded. Can you link when booking bookings are utilising vouchers?

You can find this information on ExpertFlyer but the data very close to departure is not remotely accurate (as also applies to hotels) and at any stage, one should never confuse seats available for sale (overall or in any particular class) vs actual seats available on the aircraft.
You’ve been downgraded to economy? That’s odd, as mentioned above they can extend the CE cabin as far back as they need to. You should be eligible for a small amount of downgrade reimbursement or compensation but you can come back here for advice on that after your trip.
You can’t link bookings per se but BA can put a note in them asking for you to be seated together – this is hit and miss though, and might not have made any difference to your experience today.

You can link bookings by calling, but I think it means very little. Perhaps if half the party got bumped you could all get bumped together, but not sure they’d keep your CE/downgrade you all together. You still got to use the lounge and will get downgrade reimbursement – and if you all got the flight all is good!
@DTR That’s bad luck. I am not sure about linking bookings – that may be a Gold benefit.
Not sure where you are going but at least the flight won’t be too long. Even to the Canaries. Do you still get lounge access vai status? Hope the rest of the holiday goes well.
And work out whether just asking for a refund of the difference between CE and ET is better than going for the downgrade reimbursement / compensation.

Sorry to hear that; effing annoying. What BA is saying about linking bookings could, as you say, go either way.
You can ‘link’ bookings of any type but it’s a really quite a tenuous dotted line link that really only works when a diligent agent is reviewing a flight manually. A booking can contain SSRs (special service requests) such as wheelchair or special meal, so specific actionable requests that should automatically trigger messages to the relevant service providers. For linking bookings, it’s just a TCP (to complete party) note in each booking and the respective PNRs under OSIs (other service information), so very much by the by rather than anything too important. If the linked booking were say for a child on a separate booking, that would trigger separate alerts.

Bookings cannot be linked in any meaningful, practical, way.
A Gold can use the To Complete Party ability but that is manual and is for seat selection only. It confers no other benefits to those on the other booking.
When it comes to things like irrops and downgrades each booking is treated individually.
Thanks all. Appreciate the support. That’s what I figured RE linking – it sounded like an excuse to politely blame me
– and it’s better that everyone doesn’t end up downgraded. Yes it’s strange they couldn’t just move the curtain – perhaps they already maxed out as there are already 8 rows it looks like? It’s TFS so 4 hrs but the main thing is I’m on the same flight…Just 8 CE rows? You regularly see 12 or even 14 CE rows on London to Faro and other sunny destinations.
There are a lot of variables relating to the CE/ET balance. Looking at BA2702 LGW – TFS today, it’s is completely full. They aren’t going to move the curtain back a row in order to accommodate one or two extra CE passengers if it means having to bump a couple of ET passengers off the flight completely.
While not necessarily set in stone, eight rows is the normal limit for two crew handling CE (according to the IFM I asked that very question recently as I was wondering why there had been limited seats available in CE when ET was pretty empty and the curtain was at row 8). More than eight rows may mean an extra crew member, so is a potentially significant change.
