I just saw an article on TPG UK about the changes coming to Amex Gold in October and was wondering if it’s true?
It’s looking like the PP lounge access will go up to 4 entries (up from 2) and 2.5K MR points for each £5K spent on the card, up to 12.5K MR points reached at £25K spending. Spending 15K on the card should lead to gaining 7.5K MR points rather than the 10K points offered right now.
Annual fee also goes up to $£160?
Yes yes – Rob is running an article tomorrow. JDB is displeased. It’s all in the chat thread.
It was probably announced after the early morning news items were released. But strange that after it had been released, Rob decided to only release a rather mediocre article for his Avios Barclaycard while failing to mention one of the biggest, if not the biggest, credit card news story of the year so far. Now he’s fallen a day behind other media outlets.
Not sure how it’s ‘one of the biggest’ credit card news story of the year so far. It’s a light devaluation on additional points and cost. Don’t think the number of people who spend 15k every year from second year would be very high, unless they charge their business spend to that card. In fact people should be better off cancelling the card quickly after earning these bonuses rather than wait for renewal.

uh? I think you need to revisit the press releases again. It’s a little more than just a light devaluation. You’d be suprised at how many people keep this card past year 1 and not everyone is a credit card tart!

With apologies, but think you must have been asleep when you read about the changes and maybe don’t have this card or you too would be upset by the ludicrous changes. Who on earth suggested to them a couple of PP passes would sugar the pill?
Amex has gained the ‘sadim’ touch, turning gold into sh*te. There was a thread on this in the forum a few weeks ago and loads of people are spending the £15k to get the extra 0.66 points plus airline bonus etc. It’s cheap tinkering to the detriment of the customer and with the special benefit of a fee increase.

TLFL had a piece written and published at 6am.

On the basis their article is erroneously headlined “improved benefits” the early publication doesn’t count for much. I don’t read that site, but when seeing that ‘spin’ on something which isn’t very customer friendly I wouldn’t trust their judgement on anything; they are clearly in thrall to Amex.
I repeat – JDB is displeased.
Indeed. Thank you for the double mention in dispatches. £20 fee increase fine, cutting points earning not OK.
All the changes seem quite positive apart from the extra £20 fee, which is hardly life-changing. Rob’s take on it today seems to agree. “Virtually no-one loses out”

Yep, as I said, it’s not hugely negative. It actually makes it easier to cancel the card after receiving bonuses in first or second year. Amex clearly doesn’t care about loyalty.
Looks like I’m one of the ‘winners’ of the changes – didn’t look likely to be hitting the £15k target in Year 2 (as referred Player 2 so diverted £3K of spend to get her SUB) – so I get some points I would have otherwise missed. As someone who consistently gets my £10 a month Deliveroo Credit, the card was almost paying for itself – though now the net cost is a little higher.
Funnily enough I was considering trying for a retention offer soon, with a view to switching to a BA card for 2 years. Wonder if these changes will affect how generous (or not) Amex get with these, as I imagine some people will cite the changes as a reason for cancellation.
