Forums Payment cards Other payment cards Card sequence for newbie: £40k pa spend

I’ve a friend who has been spending approx. £40k p.a. as a couple on their Tesco card but with the scheme now gutted, their thoughts are turning to miles and points.

They have not had an Amex the past 2yrs and are somewhat agnostic between airmiles or hotel points. They have no destination or grand event in mind to save towards but would just like to start building a pot that could be used in the future. Travel will be as a couple.

With Amex now changing their pro-rata refund policy, what would the HfP hive mind suggest is the best way to start building a points balance based on their spend? TIA.

Gold + BAPP each with referrals to eachother is probably where I’d start for some nice bonuses. That’d also generate 2 x 241. Then if the yearly 241 is useful keep a BAPP (or keep 2 x BAPP is 2 x 241 justifies the fees) otherwise go down to the free Barclaycard

Points are the benefit of the last resort for me when spending.

It’s the range of rebates available that tend to offer the greatest prize across any card portfolio.
