Forums Payment cards American Express Car Hire Insurance Clarity

  • 5 posts

Hi everyone, I have questions on care hire insurance with the Platinum card. I’ve looked through forum posts and read the insurance document PDF – but want to make sure I’m absolutely clear on these things (where possible from your collective knowledge!)

    1. Necessity to pay with Platinum (or any Amex) to get the cover?
    2. Is there any limit on miles travelled/ going interstate etc.?
    3. Are there any known exclusions, such as mis-fueling/ windscreen chips/ damage to tyres? These are often omitted by ‘standard’ car hire insurance, but I can’t see any reference to these in the policy as being excluded. They are all ‘damage’ to the car, so I assume they are covered?
    4. Breakdown cover included (i.e. the cost to be towed away if engine fails)?
    5. Lost key cover?
    6. In summary, if I hire a car (value <£50k) in the US and have no other insurance at all – is there anything you know of that I would not have full cover for by Amex Platinum policy (assuming no negligence, off-roading etc etc)?

Bonus question: Has there been a recent change of provider? In the forum I see reference to people dealing with AXA on claims, but the insurance document I have been sent is from Chubb!

Any answers to any of these would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

No, you don’t have to pay with an Amex.

No particular exclusions or limitations, it basically covers any theft or damage related charge the rental company might make that is not covered by included insurance.

Yes, this covers everything for the US, that’s why the limits are higher. It is much more normal to rely on credit card insurance there as nothing is included as standard.

Chubb are the underwriters, the insurance is handled by Axa, including claims.
