My OH is close to 10k on the free BA Amex, so I’ve let her know it is worth upgrading to take advantage of the improved companion voucher.
I know some people have had issues doing this upgrade via CS recently, and that there is an upgrade link which generally seems to work without issues.
My question is: Does anyone have any experience in ‘referring’ someone to the BAPP, which they then apply for, treated as an upgrade – and receiving a referral bonus for doing so?
Thanks.
It MIGHT work if you referred her for BAPP, she made a fresh application and then Amex realised it was an upgrade and transferred over her old card.
This used to work perfectly well (not sure if the referrals tracked, but the process was sound) but recent reports suggest that Amex is now blocking applications from existing cardholders and forcing you to do it over the phone, where you can’t get a referral in. Worth a try online of course.
This was discussed quite a bit last month (thread links below) but I am not sure what the final outcome was.
There is still a live link on the Amex website that indicates this is still a process that they endorse, however in the scenario you describe I don’t think you can go this route as it isn’t an option in the referral process.

This means you have to rely on the system upgrading you automagically when you apply via the referral link, which anecdotally isn’t working at present as people seem to be ending up with both cards. If it doesn’t upgrade then you have to try and cancel your basic card via chat and this does seem to work according to others.
The problem seems to be where people call/use chat to upgrade and this is where the agents say it can’t be done. Whether this is a real policy change or just poorly trained agents is anyone’s guess. I suspect the latter given the web-page upgrade link still exists.
Anyway, try it and report back please as that is the way that we all learn! Good luck 🙂
