Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Can you book flights as a holiday to a non-BA destination?

  • 25 posts

Looking to book some flights with BA on one ticket that connect with a non-BA flight.
BA don’t do car hire or a hotel at the final destination.

I would like to book the flights as part of a package so that we can get flexibility and pay just a deposit.

Is there a trick to make this possible?

So, you want to book a package holiday but the only element of the package is a flight that gets you part of the way there?

Without knowing where you are flying from, via, and to and whether both flights are bookable on BA it’s difficult to say. However, if the non BA flight is still available via BA, one thought that occurs to me is to use the ‘custom’ book on holidays, put in your first flight, then add second flight a day later and look for 1 night stopover in the interim location?

Plenty of people do that all the time. Book a Custom BAH trip with hotel wherever and whenever you like. A night at the airport before you fly out is sufficient.

You’ll need BAH to be selling the non-BA flight though. Which airline is it?

Is the second flight on a oneworld/BA partner airline? If so should be straight forward. Book a hotel at your origin airport the night before the first flight and that will qualify as a holiday (presumably LHR/LGW), then can add both flights without needing car/hotel at final destination.

You really do need to give more info to get the best advice.

This not giving all the info seems to be an increasing trend and leads to people getting the wrong advice.

A “non BA flight” could mean anything.

BA Hols doesn’t sell flights on every airline so who that “non BA flight” is with really does matter. Along with how long there is between the BA flight and the 2nd one is (and that’s another restriction as to whether the 2nd flight can be booked or not)

Thanks – apologies for the confusion.

We are looking at flying to Tortola in the BVI. So it would be British Airways LGW-ANU and then intercaribbean ANU-EIS. These are bookable on one BA ticket number.

When I try and book a hotel for the night before the flight, I get an error message saying that the hotel stay needs to be between the dates of the flights.

Are you using the “custom trip” tool? This should allow you to put the hotel stay on a different date.

We visited BVI’s and USVI’s about 25 years ago, would love to go back.

When I try and book a hotel for the night before the flight, I get an error message saying that the hotel stay needs to be between the dates of the flights.

This is new, I have booked hotels BEFORE the flight (to spend the night at the airport). Maybe you are looking for the flight AND THEN adding the hotel. Have you tried the custom holiday page?

On another note, would it be possible to do:
    – Book a cheap flight LON-EDI for instance (that you plan on doing at some point)
    – At a complete different data book a hotel somewhere else for say 2 weeks
    – Get this priced as a BAH obtaining then TPs for the hotel

That particular trick was ended under the old scheme.

Under the new one who knows? If you get them then great. If not then I don’t think you can complain. Strictly speaking booking a trip like that isn’t really a holiday is it?

One thing I hadn’t realised until I re-read the T&Cs just now is that the 5 night rule under the old scheme has gone and there is lo longer a minimum stay requirement.

In what way was it ended? It was explicitly removed from the qualification for the Double TP bonus if that’s what you mean, but it is still a legitimate BA Holidays booking in as much as the system accepts it. I don’t disagree with the view that it isn’t a ‘holiday’ in the normal sense, but if the system is happy to accept such a booking why not.

I combined an expensive Bermuda hotel in November with a cheap December flight to Oslo, purely because the hotel was a better price than elsewhere that I couldn’t combine with the Bermuda reward flight. It exists as a BAH booking with BAH bonus avios on the full cost. If it happens to earn TP as well then that will be a nice further bonus, but if not I agree I certainly won’t be complaining.

The five night rule was also only applicable to the Double TP bonus. The current TP earnings scheme for BAH bookings is not a promotion or special offer, just the ongoing process for BAH bookings.

Agreed, a holiday is pretty much what you want it to be. It’s certainly what the BA system allows, and as also noted, those terms are regularly being changed. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve had BAH’s which were hotel plus car, for example, with no flights involved. I’ve currently got one which has car hire spanning 2 continents, months apart. I’ll be sure to report back about whether these earn TPs under the new regime!

Being able to book something doesn’t mean it qualifies for the full TPs though

    This is from the FAQs

Can I still earn tier points for British Airways Holidays package bookings?

Yes, Club members will continue to earn tier points on British Airways Holidays “Flight + Hotel” and “Flight

    (Snip)

You must book through the Flight + Hotel or Flight + Car option and add the individual British Airways Club number for each member prior to travel to earn tier points for your British Airways Holidays package.

No mention of hotel only, car only or hotel + car bookings.

Nobody is saying it will! Just that you can still get the benefits of the low deposit and BAH customer support if you’re not bothered about earning TPs/avios.
