Hi, new here so very vague on how things work. Barclaycard have offered me the choice of a BA cabin upgrade voucher or 7000 Avios. Can you explain what’s best and why?
    Thanks

It really depends on your circumstances. If you’re likely to use the voucher on a long haul redemption, then it is far more valuable than 7000 Avios. Alternatively if you have no travel plans then you might as well take the points.

There are numerous articles and threads on here about the avios Barclaycard and voucher, e.g.

Having had two unused Barclays vouchers, I was delighted to take the 7000 Avios alternative.

As we are going through a phase of flying East for our holidays, I’m starting to find it difficult to use the BAPP voucher as well, and will probably downgrade my Amex. My next trip will be entirely on Finnair.

Different story of course if you fly west, with plenty of availability on IAG.

    7,000 Avios at 1p a point = £70.

Question is: can you get more than £70 value from an upgrade voucher?

If no BA status – and living outside London, so need a domestic connection – then that is four lounge visits. Got to be worth £17.50 each.

If in London and with a Priority Pass, then maybe not.

If outside London and a direct low-cost flight is available, maybe not.

    Hope that gives some ideas.

Long-haul it has to be worth more than £70.

I think the monetary value is even less – I think if it as 7000 points that can be bought with approx £64 (@0.92p per Avios) using Avios Boost

The upgrade voucher can be worth up to 110,000 avios.

I used to say the Barclays Upgrade Voucher is hard to use given the inferior nature of it vs the BAPP voucher but I have just redeemed 2 separate vouchers on 2 Business Class redemptions: one for Singapore and one for Tokyo. These are historically tough routes to find but with flexibility – it can be done on the Barclays Upgrade Voucher.

Even with Silver status and Priority Pass; I’d still rate this as more than £800 of value; it will also give me the experience of flying Business Class long haul for the price of Economy; something that I wouldn’t have been able to afford.

If you are vague about it, it is best to start with reading about it on this blog and run it thru some of your realistic circumstances.

Interested at your claim you can travel Club World (business) for the price of economy using this voucher?
    Can you elaborate?
