Forums Frequent flyer programs Virgin Flying Club Booking return using Companion Voucher

  • 3 posts

Hi. I am hoping to book a UC flight using a credit card companion voucher, the outbound leg will be six weeks before the inbound. Am I right in thinking that it is similar to the BA system (if that is the right term to use when it concerns BA’s IT) that I book the outbound when it opens up, using the voucher, and then when the inbound opens up I contact them again and add the return leg and pay the extra cash and points and that the voucher will be live for the return leg? All advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi @legin – in my experience it is best to book the outbound via the VS call centre too and not online. When I used a voucher online in the past I was told they couldn’t add the return leg on to my booking without cancelling and re-booking and there was no guarantee the reward seats would drop back into available inventory. So call up their gold line as you’re booking UC (08000721234) and make the initial booking – they’ll apply half your voucher – then call again when the return seats are released and they’ll be able to add for you. It sounds clunky but ime the VS lines have much shorter hold times than BA and the agents are normally very helpful and efficient. Good luck!

I thought the voucher couldn’t be used online full stop, but required a call to Virgin?

Yes – correct – I had booked 2 UC redemption seats online and expected to be able to phone and ask them to apply the voucher and book the return legs at the same time. I should have been clearer!

Thanks to you both, very helpful. I will follow your suggestion and ‘phone the gold line at the appropriate times.

Am I correct in saying if you book the outward flight and return flight separately using points or a companion voucher
i.e. you book the outward flight as soon as it appears this will cost more money than if you were to book both flights at the same time – when the return leg was available – however, If you phone to book the return flight (if outward flight already booked) the agent should be able to link the booking and change it to a return ticket therefore the cost would not be as much as booking the outward and return flight sepeartely??

Yes. When you add the inbound to an existing outbound PNR, it will be treated as one return ticket including the charges/taxes.

It’s not always more expensive to book 2 one ways, may even be cheaper depending on the destination.

Thank you very much – really was not 100% sure if this was possible!
