Forums Hotel loyalty schemes Marriott Bonvoy Booking for others

  • 11 posts

I have status thanks to my Amex Platinum, so my parents have asked me to book hotels for them for an upcoming trip to the US. But does this work/is it allowed?
I’ve had a look around various forums but not found a definitive answer. Also most answers seem to concern points bookings. These would be cash.
Is it just a case of the card used for the booking being in one of their names? The big worry is that the hotel refuse to let them check in without me present.
This also applies to other loyalty programmes but we’ve been looking at Marriott, hence asking here. Any advice appreciated.

Easiest thing would be to get a free supplementary card for one of your parents using the link that gets you 5k amex points (google amex add a supplementary card). Then they can get status themselves.

My wife already has my free supplementary, but I might actually recommend my parents for the platinum to get the 12k points bonus and they can do the bookings in their own name with status.
But I’d still be interested to know how the original scenario would work with booking for others.

Marriott gold status with Amex plat isn’t going to get you much in the US. Doesn’t qualify for free breakfast so it’s a very expensive card just for status. How about recommending them for the Amex Marriott card instead at only £75/year it’s probably better value and they’ll get silver status.

You could recommend them both and they’re off to 20k points each which can be converted to various airline miles if they want to.

As mentioned, status often doesn’t get you very much in the US. Which hotel/s are your parents wanting to book? If applicable have they considered booking via Emyr for the benefits he can provide?

No, the elite guest has to be staying. If not, and someone else is to take advantage of elite benefits, then that’s defrauding the programme.

You’ll likely hear stories online of people who got away with it. As someone who values Bonvoy points like precious gems, I certainly wouldn’t proceed down this risky route.
