Has anyone experienced this before? I’ve got 2 rooms booked at the Nottingham Doubletree for Friday. Today I had a payment, which i had no idea about, blocked by Amex fraud prevention, from the hotel for £25. The hotel said that as the hotel was full they were trying to weed out fraudulent bookings or bookings made with invalid cards. Amex said the hotel should never try an unauthorised charge as it should always be blocked. I found the hotel’s action bizarre and has wasted a lot of time today sorting it out.
That does sound weird as I find that you need a valid card to make a Hilton booking these days, even if it’s a fully flexible rate. For years I had an expired card on file (and was never asked to update it) then just produced the new one at check-in, but maybe 12 months or so ago the system started asking for a valid card whenever I made a new booking. I’ve also had a message that a card used in the booking process would expire before the date of the stay.
Note – I don’t try and use dodgy cards on hotel bookings, I just mix them up a lot depending on current offers and spend targets!
