So I currently have the Barclaycard free Avios card which I’ve hard for awhile but not hitting the yearly 20k spending (I realise now I should have got the paid one) and I have an old Amex Platinum cashback.
I’m thinking of getting the Amex BA Premium Plus as it’s one of the only new card promo offers that I’m eligible for. Plan is to use it for a bit and then downgrade it for the pro rata fee return?
I do like the look of the Gold Rewards card though which I may get to use alongside it. If I got the Gold too would I be able to get a referral bonus? I’m confused as to how the referrals work when you’re already an Amex customer

Thanks Rob, I read the article. I guess my main questions are below
– am I at risk of the pro rata fee refund being denied to me with Amex’s plan to remove them?
– can I get a referral for the gold card as well? Or can I not get any due to already being an Amex memberYou can get the bonus on the Gold (if you’ve not had any Amex in the last 2 years), and also get one on BAPP (if you had no BA Amex in the last 2 years). You couldn’t go for the BAPP first, and then get the bonus on Gold.
You’re free to use a referral to get more points for each card.
Gold and then BAPP is a great way to start with generous SUB’S, and only £250 to pay in the first year.
You can get more points going for Nectar/Marriott, then BAPP/Platinum, Platinum/BAPP, but that’s about £1k in card fees alone.
When you say you have the old platinum cashback card do you mean you still have the card, active, at the moment? If so per the article that you read, you would NOT qualify for the gold bonus but yes to the BAPP assuming you have not had any avios earning amex card opened in the last 24 months.
You said you can’t meet the 20k spend for the Barclays free card, does that mean you can meet the 10k for the BAPP 241? or you don’t need the voucher and just after the sign up bonus?
If you are not in a hurry I would wait for a sign up bonus uplift. BUT as you know amex has not confirmed when they are removing the pro rata fees refund, all we know is later in the year. If you want the 241 and will need time to earn the voucher as not a high spender then better to start earlier.

You seem a bit keen on referral I assume you know that is not the same as a sign up bonus. Referral means you are referred by another existing member (we are not keen on self referral here). If you don’t qualify for the SUB it doesn’t matter if you are referred or not. If you do qualify for a SUB then usually being referred gets you a few k more.

Thank you. Yeah I could meet 10,000 or 12,000 but the 20,000 I need to reach at the moment on the free Barclaycard is a bit of a push.
Yeah unfortunately my Amex platinum cashback is still active, I didn’t initially realise it had to be closed for 2 years. I thought you just had to wait 2 years haha!
Not overly keen on referral just want extra points – it wasn’t clear to me if I could still get bonus points as it talked about being a new card member when I looked at the referral options

I missed the part where you mentioned you already have an Amex cashback card. In that case, you couldn’t get the bonus on Gold, only BAPP and Platinum.

Thanks. So if I got a referral for a card I don’t qualify for a welcome bonus – would I just get the extra referral points (minus the welcome offer?). Or do I not get anything as I already have an Amex card.
Someone referring you for a card has no bearing on the SUB – that’s down to your personal eligibility. If you refer someone else for a card, you will get a referral bonus if they apply and are accepted, but again their own circumstances would dictate whether they get a SUB. They are 2 separate things, apart from, as already mentioned, the SUB can be a bit higher if you are referred by another cardholder.
Have a read of Rob’s articles which go into all this in more depth.
