Looking for suggestions/advice please…
We are arriving into Gatwick at 05.45am, and have a connecting flight to Edinburgh from Heathrow at 11.05am (both BA, and they are on the same booking number). So about 5 hours between arriving in one airport and departing from another.
Looking for best and most reliable way to get to Heathrow from Gatwick based on your experience…has anyone used National Express coach and do you recommend, or are we better getting a private taxi transfer (4 of us with 4 cases).
Slightly risky I know but I think we have sufficient time to get to Heathrow, still being mindful of Gatwick arrival, immigration, luggage collection, driving time on M25 etc then arrival, check-in and security etc at Heathrow. Otherwise BA wouldn’t have sold us a ticket! If we didn’t make it due to circumstances beyond our control (weather/traffic) – are BA still liable to get us to Edinburgh??
Thanks in advance!
As well as the National Express coach there is also the Oxford Airlink that also serves the two airports.
I have no problem with using the coach. The drivers are experienced and know the alternative routes should the M25 have issues.
IIRC the BA MCT between LGW and LHR is 3 1/2 hours so with 5 you still have plenty of slack.
Sticking with Public transport the Thameslink / Lizzie line is also a good option.
I don’t know what your ultimate destination is, but you know there’s a LGW-GLA flight about 10.30 am? Yes, BA would still get you to EDI but if the inbound flight was delayed, transferring to LHR would just about finish me off!
I think it depends on your preferences.
* Train with one change at Farringdon would take you 90-100 minutes
* Coach about 70-90 minutes probably the cheapest if you can book in advance
* Taxi 40-60 mins probably the fastest
You should just be outside the peak so all methods should work, take your pick!
With four people and cases I would suggest an Uber XL, if only for convenience and not having to lug cases between stations. It cost about £80 when I did it late last year, so not a lot more than public transport At rush hour it will take about 90 minutes.
Just a word of caution as you didn’t mention when you are travelling. The M25 is shut on that section (J10-11) between Friday 15-Mar 21:00 to Mon 18-Mar 06:00.

Be aware, the dates for this closure were only announced recently and another 4 weekends are scheduled. It sounds like large areas of Surrey close to this part of the M25 could be gridlocked. Motorists are being advised not to follow satnavs but to follow the signposts!
Further warning about the M25 this weekend. A colleague who lives very close to the official (signposted) detour says that it passes through a single lane traffic light controlled bridge. It may turn out to be a Y2K non event, but it sounds madness to be trying roads in the vicinity this weekend.
The Oxford airline is a good shout – 45 quid for 4 and for me personally a coach will be preferable to an Uber XL for 4 + 4 bags. Only runs ~hourly though. Nat express is 80 for 4 so that’d be my backup plan if I’d just missed the airline
We did this last month, it was less of an expense and a faff than I had anticipated.
There was a Flix coach that took us door to door from Gatwick South terminal to Heathrow terminal 5, we landed at around 8, got the coach about 9 and were in Heathrow by about 10:30 plenty of time ahead of our 13:00 flight to Edinburgh.
We didn’t prebook the coach and the driver let us pay by card on the bus, it was £12 per person.
