Forums Hotel loyalty schemes Marriott Bonvoy Best use of Amex/Avios points to book Marriott

    Hi,

I’m looking to book a couple of rooms at the Bankside Hotel (Autograph Cl) for two nights and want to use my existing Amex Rewards points (approx 100k) and Avios (approx 500k) to offset the cost. I know I can transfer Amex points into Marriott 2:3 which will get me 150k but I’m not clear if I can convert Avios to Marriott points? Or if it’s beneficial to convert my Amex points to Avios (or something else) first and then convert them again into Marriott?

When is this reservation for? Don’t rush into anything. Start reading the 101 type archived articles on here about best use of Amex points, etc.

Generally Amex points have most value squeezed from them when converted to airline points.

Also generally it is a bad idea to convert hotel points to airline points and vice versa and you always lose value on the exchange.

You can use Avios -> Nectar and book with Nectar hotels. Unlikely to be a better deal than using cash if you value Avios at 0.9p each or above.

Amex -> Marriott can be worth it, but you need to do the maths versus a cash booking. I’d be looking for at least a penny per Amex point before making a transfer and then booking.

If you are cash-strapped do the maths on both, and pick the “least bad” 🙂

Reservation is for a weekend in October. I’ve had a look at Nectar hotels but they want approx 220k Nectar points for the stay where as its 174k in Marriott points.

As Amex to Nectar convert at 1:1, it seems my best option is to convert my 100k Amex points into 150k Marriott points (2:3) and then buy another 24k Marriott points (approx £240) to make up the difference. Cash price of the room is approx £1100 total so I think that means I’m getting 0.8p per Amex point…?!
