I currently only have a BA premium plus card.

I want to get my wife a amex card to start building avios while shopping.

What is the best route to take to maximise points/benefits. Should i add her as a supplementary card to my account or apply for a new account in her name.

Definitely not. You want to get her a card of her own, with you referring her from your account.

This article gives you a very aggressive route to do it if you’re happy taking out lots of cards over a couple of years: https://www.headforpoints.com/2021/01/22/how-a-couple-can-earn-186875-avios-from-american-express/

I’ve read this below article before which is great but I remember thinking at the time that a version needs to be made where one person already has an Amex. I’ve had the BA Premium Plus card for years now whilst my wife has not have a Amex card in over two years.

Reading the above article, I’m wondering what the best order to get and refer each other would be. I’m struggling to make sense of it based on the the order above. In the long term I don’t think she wants a BA Premium Plus card as we struggle to use our companion voucher every year anyway so having another will be a challenge.

    Thoughts?

@Dashimus you can only get a sign up bonus for platinum.

So you refer wife for Nectar or Bonvoy. Wife refers you for Platinum, you refer her for Platinum or BAPP, then refer her for BAPP or Platinum.

If you don’t need another companion voucher your wife’s BAPP can just be spent on enough to earn the SUB.

Because all Amex’s require no personal Amex for the last 24 months to qualify for the SUB. Apart from BAPP and Platinum. That is why you get one of the others first (Nectar or Marriott) then move on to BAPP and Platinum, these two in whichever order you like.

    Thanks @SteveJ.

That’s helpful. I guess my final question is, why can’t your first card be the preferred Gold rather than the Nectar? What am I missing? With the Nectar you get 13125 Avios for the SUB, whereas on preferred Gold you get 22000, admittedly you have to spend and extra £1000 in the first 3 months. What am I missing? Thanks.

The Gold is a membership rewards card. Getting that would mean you can’t get the sign up for the Platinum Card.
