Ah if we are going back to legacy cards, then the MBNA Horizon deserves a mention! 😅 fx free and 0.5% cb

Like others I do still hold Halifax Clarity but *only* as a backup. It sits in my carryon with the backup earphones and ibuprofen, just in case!

I read somewhere that it is good practice to keep hold of your longest running credit line – so I also hold clarity for that reason / showing a long term healthy credit relationship.

My longest credit line is a Halifax current account with £500 overdraft…

My Clarity occasionally gives me 0.5% cashback for 3 months, need to opt in. And occasionally the offers are useful. (They had 2% on ebay in April which I’ve just discovered didn’t actually require paying with the clarity card)

As for best legacy card, I have a Capital One which is slightly better as it has 0% fx and 0.5% cashback as well as £10 extra cashback per year (for paying bill on time).

Hotels are the killers for surcharges, seems to be universal (not just Aussie though, all of the South Pacific do it). Probably a few others too, but in general it’s not too bad.

Aren’t surcharges illegal if there’s no way to pay the advertised price without the surcharge? So far I’ve got around them by using HSBC debit card 2% cashback and paying in $99 increments, but that’s not practical for larger bills.

It uses the Mastercard rate and there are better rates, but 1.5% cashback is bonkers. The website doesn’t mention any fees so I guess this is all free for now?

They must be haemorrhaging VC money like crazy. I guess at some point they will introduce fees like everyone else or just fold.

Is this not capped at £22.50/month and does it not end on 30 June? The bald facts are of little use as they don’t tell the real story, just like most stuff in election time.

These challenger banks do all smell of underpants gnomes.

    1. Give money away for free
    2. ???
    3. Profit

Algbra is backed by Standard Chartered so a bit more solid than some but yes, there are just so many of these fintechs desperate to acquire customers but more importantly to persuade them to keep using the platform. Monese may have sold lots of gift cards but didn’t gain a lot of regular customers. Revolut (which is currently trying to sell $500m of shares for employees) says it has more than 10m UK customers but I wonder how many are meaningfully active.

I know many who have it only for the ease to trade crypto. Crypto is one of the biggest source of revenue for Revolut, but thats one of the reasons why would never get a banking license here.

So it seems the answer is, other than Curve, there’s no clear winner?
