‘morning
Significant birthday next year in January and we’ll be in Belfast for a Saturday & Sunday. Suggestions for nice hotels and eateries? TIA.
Indy
I wouldn’t particularly recommend the places we ate but the Crown Liquor Saloon for a pint of Guinness is a must. If you want to go to the Giants Causeway then renting a car from the city airport for the day was straightforward, although I imagine in January it will be somewhat chilly! If you do fly to the city airport then the bus into town was easy and only £2.30 each way.
It’s been about 10 years since I was in Belfast but I seem to remember the Cathedral Quarter being a really nice area of the city.
One thing to add, be prepared for the litter, the worst I’ve seen in any UK city for decades!
coincidentally I’m looking at a potential Belfast trip next year too
My first thought is the IHG Voco which looks good value, but open to other suggestions?
Rayannne BnB in Holywood (not far from the City) has the world’s best breakfast and was my preferred go-to during my many, many visits. Mo Molam was a regular I believe.
I am from Belfast and have plenty of eateries to suggest. Too many really, so let me know area (or if you have a car) / type of foods you like / budget. To start though, for a nice dinner Ox is great as a fancy option, as is The Ginger Bistro for a more moderate price. I would choose Noble in Holywood over both but this is a little outside Belfast although easy with a car. Also in Holywood is The Dirty Duck pub which does great food. Go even further out of Belfast and Wine and Brine in Moira is incredible and outstanding value. In the city centre common market is cool and there is some great food in there.
Can’t help with hotels I’m afraid, although if this is a holiday then really no need to stay in the city centre which isn’t particularly nice in my opinion. I’d prefer to stay in the Culloden (Holywood/Cultra area) but I am sure there would be some great b&bs too.
Also no idea where Strickers was specifically but Belfast is far from the worst place I’ve been in the U.K. for litter.
@Niall It was nearly everywhere we went, we stayed near the Europa, walked through most of the central areas. Used the new bus/train station and also walked daily to the Odyssey. The only place that wasn’t littered was as we crossed the bridge to the concert venue. I’ve never seen so many fag buts.
Would highly recommend The Merchant Hotel, and agree with Ox for a meal. I’d also suggest booking a Taste & Tour food tour early on in your stay which will give you a good feel for different places.

Sorry to hear this. Any particular time? I haven’t worked in the city centre for a couple of years now but definitely it didn’t used to be the worst litter of anywhere in the U.K.
@Niall All day everywhere we went, it’s such a shame because it’s a great city. There were some areas, particularly around the Odyssey and Titanic museum that were mostly litter free but that was about it.

Sorry I didn’t mean time of day, I meant time of year.
The Merchant is a good place to stay. The Titanic is ok but a short walk to town. Eating at Ox is always something I do when I’m over (if you like michelin stars), and Mourne Seafood. Then drink at The Crown, Duke of York, Kelly’s, Whites, Sunflower, Dirty Onion and Bittles.
Culloden is the 5 star place…go a little further East to the Clandeboye lodge
My daughter is travelling to Vietnam in mid/late May for a month long post uni holiday and is looking at low cost options for getting there and for internal flights.
Any advice on airlines you would recommend or, probably more impotantly, recomend avoiding would be appreciated.
I also live in Belfast and to a list of hotels, I’d add Bullitt which is another independent and quite funky. It’s very central too. Grand Central is relatively new but in my books a bit beige and nothing exciting.
Food wise great suggestions above, there’s also Edo and Waterman Bistro and finally (though I’ve never been) Muddlers Club is rated very highly. Dining at Ox is a brilliant experience.
I’m from Belfast. There are loads of places to eat that are good.
Ox, which has been mentioned is a fine dining restaurant. Think small portions at inflated prices. My favourite restaurant is a family owned bring your own called Hope Street but, you’ll have loads of choice when you arrive. I love The Dirty Dock pub for food as well and it’s only 10-15 minutes away from Belfast city centre on the train.
We have a range of hotels in the city centre including 3 Premier Inns which are budget friendly right up to the Merchant, Hilton, the Grand Central and a new five star hotel right next to City Hall which will open later this year called The Bedford.
