Forums Other Destination advice Barbados around New Years Eve – ideas?

  • 192 posts

just managed to use our Virgin 241s LHR-BGI with upper coming home 🙂 for a few nights over New Year. wondering if you guys and gals have any hot tips for Barbados in what must be the most peak of peak weeks. Never been to Caribbean, but given island pricing I expect this to be painful.

NYE party that doesnt cost $400 each?
Hotels? pool and beach please… lots are full, others are crazy expensive it seems, any recommendations not on the usual booking.com/hotels.com? Budget up to £250 per night per room.
Apartments? I have reserved one on the south coast (SL Gap), but is cancellable – we are 4 adults (double + twin)
    Sargassum expectations?
Which coast? seems east coast is wild, little/no development, west and south are super busy. Thinking book south and visit the west via local bus and east with a local car hire (any recommended?).

We stayed at white sands beach condos in SL gap in january. Really good location right on the beach (which is very quiet) so would recommend them.

Even though west coast seems to be where the fancy places are, I quite enjoyed being on the south part with walking distance to reasonably priced bars and food, and then get the bus or taxi to far away places.

Really enjoyed cool runnings cruise and also oistins for the fish fry. Mount gay visitor centre if you like rum too.

    It’s not gonna be cheap.
The west coast is Sargassam free mostly
You will need to book well on advance
There is free fireworks on the beaches
If you want something nice for NYE , you’re gonna pay a couple of thousand minimum for 4 people.

I been there over NYE , its either pay or go to the beach with the locals. There is nothing else.

Accommodation costs will be $300 plus plus , cars will be very scarce , taxis will cost the earth. Whatever you decide to do , book it in advance or just take a bottle to the beach and chill .

Personally I would choose either st lawrence gap or Holetown depending of what you can find.

Don’t forget the jetlag , midnight will be very early in the morning UK time.

    Have a great trip.

I agree with Roberto, unless your idea of a great NYE is paying a fortune to party with strangers, I’d get a nice apartment, buy a few bottles of bubbly in advance (hence you need a kitchen with a fridge), go (walk) to the beach with the locals/find a spot where you can see the fireworks.
Then treat yourself later with some of the money you saved!
The free stuff is the best anyway, glorious sunshine in the depths of winter, surf gently hitting white sand, birds singing …

East coast has rougher seas, I personally wouldn’t stay here unless you want to surf. I stayed on the south and it was lovely. Hired a car which was great, but the roads aren’t signposted well at all.

Bear in mind it will go dark about 6pm-ish as it’s close to the equator. Later than the UK but not much later.
