Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BA upgrade voucher outbound and cash ticket inbound?

  • 26 posts

Currently planning a trip from London to Sao Paulo, then return from Rio to London.

There is only upgrade availability and ‘vanilla redemption’ outbound but absolutely nothing inbound. Is there a way book the inbound journey with cash but not paying the crazily expensive long haul one-way ticket? I don’t think I can activate the upgrade voucher on the “multi-city” page?

Will this “sale” be possible even if I ring the call centre?

Ideally I could have booked it as 2 x one way redemption – but hey ho!
    Thanks in advance.

Do you mean the Barclays upgrade voucher, and is it just you travelling? Which cabin do you want to upgrade to?

You can use the upgrade voucher on an open jaw booking but you need to call BA. You can also use it one way, although you obviously this doesn’t get you the best value of out it (unless booking for 2 people).

There’s no way of combining avios and cash tickets on one booking, so if you do need to buy a cash return you might want to shop around and look at other airline’s prices.

Have you looked at doing it the other way around, and also checked if Iberia has any availability? You can’t use the voucher on Iberia but it would save you paying over the odds for a one-way cash flight.

Thanks! I thought this may be the case – would prefer direct flight due to my own schedule and BA seems to be the only carrier from Rio. May have to find another opportunity to use it I suppose.

Booking for 2 people – but planning to come back to London end of August so it’s probably peak summer time.

You’ve probably left it quite late for Rio availability in peak season.

You’re able, of course, to upgrade 2 of you one-way, on the outbound, thereby getting full use of the voucher.
