Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BA upgrade HKG to LHR

  • 72 posts

    All,

Just wondering, is paying cash to upgrade (about £700) from WT to WTP a good deal or not?

WT to CW is out of the question at the moment. It is £3000+ at the moment. 😂

    Thanks.

IMO, definitely not!! I don’t think that will be a promotional fare. Hold out to see if you get one of those in the app/on MMB/email. Doesn’t seem to be lots of data on HKG but based on SIN something in the region of £150-300 (using FlyerT posts) is more realistic/palatable.

It is now down to £237 on MMB. Just wonder is it a good deal?

    Club is £3238.

For £237, I’d go for it.

On a side note, a friend of a friend flew this route a couple days ago, and BA has managed to lose his checked bags…

Also, can you upgrade again to CW afterward? Using cash.

I had a look at other forums, it seems £237 is below the average price. So, it is very tempting.

Yep I would jump at it at that price! Factor in the extra avios/tier points too…

No – you can only upgrade one class level with either cash or Avios. However, you may be able to upgrade further at the airport on day of travel … this will be a cash only option (not Avios) but always worth asking for a long flight in case they have capacity and offer you a bargain! Also, if you hope to do this I’d make sure you leave a bit of extra time to sort this out as in my experience it can sometimes take a while to process with BA IT!

Yep, I’d take that! I look it this way, I get no sleep in WT and get some sleep in WT+
And yeah extra TPs might be worthwhile if that’s something you’re bothered about.

Thanks for the info. In terms of TP, will you get the correct amount of TP after upgrading in the airport? I heard it from somewhere else you will not get the new amount of TP when upgrading using cash in the airport.

    Thanks.

If you upgrade using cash then you should receive the increase TPs and Avios earning from the higher cabin, irrespective of whether you did so beforehand or at the airport.

There is now a dedicated counter at LHR T5 where you can do this pre-flight and also upgrade using Avios (UUA), although I think this option doesn’t apply to you as you’ve already UUA one class.

This may be why you’re remembering that upgrade at airport doesn’t earn, as you don’t earn the higher class TPs/Avios doing UUA nor if you are upgrading a ticket that was originally a reward flight (redemption ticket) booking…

    BA T&Cs for upgrades state:
Members of the British Airways Executive Club are eligible for Avios and Tier Points associated with the higher cabin. In the event that these are not credited at the time of the flight, they can be claimed retrospectively within six months through ba.com once travel has been completed. Customers who upgrade from a redemption ticket are not eligible for Avios or Tier points in either the original or upgraded cabin.

237 is great, go for it!

There used to be a lot of issues with TPs posting when you did upgrades but I think mainly it’s resolved now. Otherwise you can submit a query if it posts incorrectly

So, I went for it and now I am in WTP.

It seems like from yesterday, upgrade from WTP to CW was £3100.

    Today, it is £1300.

    Nice one!

£1300 seems a bit steep. I’d probably go for the WTP–>CW upgrade only if it was less than the £700/800 mark.

    Hi all

Just to hijack this one with a similar Q. Currently in Singapore with the family. Four of us came in into Singapore on Club Suites via 2 x 241 and under MMB I have the option to upgrade from WT to WTP for £299 per person.

Sounds like good value but wondering what the benefits aside from the obvious seat upgrades are – i.e. is there a way to determine the amount of Avios in advance? Don’t think I’ll be troubling tier point status in a hurry.

Recently had BA email re upgrading flight (LHR to JNB 04/09/23) from CW to F, and rang Gold line as online links didn’t work. Flights are Avios 2 for 1. Nothing available in Avios or cash upgrades, but he said that we could ask about cash upgrades at desk check in, but don’t check in online beforehand. In the past we have been involuntarily upgraded to first at check in and at the gate, having checked in online as usual, so we were surprised by his comments. Is this a new regulation? Wondered if anyone else has been told this?
Currently there is availability in F.

I suppose the return is cash and not an avios booking as you are given an option to upgrade.

If so, more than the avios it is the TPs that would increase significantly (SG may very well be 90 or 100 per flight).

Nope – 241 used both ways…..but I could only get WT on the return leg due to lack of availability in Club or WTP when I booked

Many thanks for the advice. Just upgraded to CW for £580.
