Forums Other Flight changes and cancellations help BA ticket validity rules for booking in September 2021

  • 69 posts

This concerns a trip first booked in September 2021 for travel April 2022 on BA.com. All segments were cancelled and the robot rebooking option was ignored.

At the time of booking in September 2021 (ticket issuance) BA’s definition of ticket validity was one year from outbound departure. It seems they changed their mind in October 2021 and it went back to one year from ticket issuance. Validity based on outbound departure led to a HfP article at the time. https://www.headforpoints.com/2021/07/19/british-airways-flight-cancellation-policy/

As a result, when cancellations came, I was aware of the policy and knew we had until April 2023 to fly the ticket, free of charge.

Having been on to BA today, they tell me that the ticket can only be refunded because it’s (almost) out of validity.

    That doesn’t seem right?

I would have another go with a different agent. If BA is digging in its heels over this, though, you might have to resort to legal measures to enforce your UK261 re-routing rights. Have a look at the many threads on here re that as it’s not as simple as you have X amount of time to travel, you would have to make a case for pushing it beyond the dates in BA’s T & Cs, e.g. why you could only travel on specific new dates. Someone lost a case recently as the arbitrator sided with BA – obviously all cases are different but the differing results people have reported here go to show that this is quite a complex issue.

There’s a thread below this one about setting out your claim for CEDR!

@Abdul I was in exactly the same position as you.

The thread above may also help along with the replies from the kind people on HfP.

I opted to go for CEDR in the end and BA have a deadline to reply by 9th September (although I feel they will request multiple extensions)

I really recommend reading the guidance set out by @StillintheSun (post above) as I used the template and guidance which was extremely useful.

I’ve read your post, but it seems different. It looks like your ticket issuance was December 2021, by this stage, BA had already reverted back to standard one year from date of issue instead of one year from date of departure. This was well publicised on Flyertalk.

At the time of my reservation as well as cancellation, ticket validity was one year from departure, which is fine for us as our new dates would be inside of this period.

I still haven’t managed to speak to someone in the UK who might care a bit more and be willing to check the policies at the time for the time of reservation and cancellation. The Indian call centre is very poor.

Promised a call back by the Indian call centre.

Do you think the call came…?

    My goodness BA is terrible.
