Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BA flights to Rome very expensive?

  • 15 posts

    Hi everyone,

Does anyone know why LHR-FCO CE flights are so expensive for June comparing to all the other nearby airports in Italy?

Also, it seems only LHR-FCO route is currently available, no other Rome airports. I am sure there was LGW-FCO a few years ago.

    Thank you.

Rome seems extortionate on BA at all times of the year, and in both cabins, when compared to similar length destinations.

It was a rare time when we used a 241 voucher to go to Rome at Easter a few years ago, but it made sense!

Vueling has a base at FCO, it seems IAG decided that VY would replace BA on LGW-FCO.

I agree, we used a 2-4-1 last time we went for the rugby (despite getting flights early) otherwise they were eye wateringly expensive.

You’re not going to like the hotel prices then.

On the plus side there’s bucket loads of reward seats available.

+ 1 to this – I was very surprised at hotel prices for a weekend in Feb ! Even the likes of Wizzair / Easyjet aren’t cheap for decent times either so went for Avios.

I took the LGW-FCO a couple of times, seem to remember it was a very pleasant afternoon timing.

I actually think BA protects a lot of seats on this route for connecting traffic – whenever I fly to the US there always seems to be a lot of Italians / Americans who have been to Italy onboard. The off-peak flights that don’t connect e.g. the last flight FCO-LHR are inexpensive usually

Also if you need to pay cash, have a look at BA Holidays. When we went, OH and son went on avios and I booked a BA holiday package in my name but with a suite which slept 3 of us – about 20 mins walk from the centre but was excellent value for the money.

    What are the other airports?

Once you add in the cost of getting from them to Rome the difference may not be that grant.

Few months ago some friends thought booking a flight to Rotterdam was a good idea for a weekend in Amsterdam. Well they did until they realised that with the costs of getting to / from Amsterdam and the xtra time added onto the trip that it was overall cheaper to fly direct to AMS.

Seconded. Plotting something for May next year and flights are on Avios, but decent hotel prices are looking very painful. Hoping Black Friday offers up something.

I have done Eindhoven (£17 RTN pp) to then head up to Amsterdam on train. EIN is a great little city.

I am guessing Naples, Florence, Perugia and Pisa. Obviously I do not know the OP dates but looking at the app cheapest fare option for a 7 days return in CE, it gives me £440 for Rome, £302 for Naples, £388 Perugia, £252 Pisa.

Italian train fare are reasonably cheap but connecting from airport to train station may cost a bit extra (taxi) and a fair amount of time.. Also time needed overall to reach final destination may not be great

Finally someone pointed out how expensive flights to Rome are with BA.

I was supposed to fly one way from FCO to MAN (via LHR) – and BA was quoting me £400 in Economy Plus.

For that price, I will be flying from Rome to Linate with ITA, and LIN-LHR-MAN with BA for a total of £270 one way.

It could actually be the MAN leg pushing it up that high – those fares can be £300 or more, one-way, in economy at very popular times! I would have thought that most people here would have avios for these eventualities (if there are award seats available).

That’s interesting – I’ve thought about doing this but assumed the hotel would only be expecting one guest and refuse the others, whatever size room. With “grown up” children whose plans change, booking them on Avios provides useful flexibility. (Mind you this would have been most useful for us when BA holidays offered James Villas properties but sadly James Villas are no more.)

I’ve never had an issue doing this; I always make sure the room I select during the booking process sleeps the number I want (e.g. the suite in Rome had a sofa bed in the living room), then drop the hotel an email mentioning the number of people who will be staying just to cover all bases. I don’t know if there would be an issue, say, somewhere like Germany where it’s usual to charge a supplement for a 2nd person in a room.

Thanks, will store away in grey matter for future reference!

Do you value your time so little that you will be taking 3 flights instead of the direct Jet2 or easyJet?

Not sure I’d use this example. I’m very confident that starting at any point in central London (bar Paddington station) I could get to Centraal station in Amsterdam quicker via LCY-RTM than you via LHR-AMS.

Block time from LHR is 30 mins longer than LCY & less reliable which would give me ample time to get bus to Rotterdam station. In the 20 mins extra I’d have on the train you’d have to walk 5-15 mins to Schipol immigration & deal with the inevitable 10-40minute queue then get to platform.

Price wise you’re looking at ~€20 vs €6.
