Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club BA companion voucher – London to Mexico City, Cancún to London rtn

    Hi,

I hope someone can advise with my planning on using my BA companion voucher. I have booked a guided tour from Mexico City to Cancun, I am of the understanding that I have to fly out and return to the same airport when using the companion voucher. BA fly from Heathrow to Mexico City direct but from Cancún they fly to Gatwick. So am I right in the I would need 2 companion vouchers to make this journey – one voucher for each way?

Since I only have one companion voucher, does this mean my only option is to make my own way back from Cancún to Mexico City airport to make use of the companion voucher.

I was also looking into using the voucher with Iberia from Madrid to Mexico City and return from Cancún but Iberia seem not to fly direct from Cancún.

Sounds a great trip. You can use different departure points, as long as they comply with “open jaw” rules (you might want to look this up if you’re not familiar with it), but you’ll need to call BA to book it. LHR and LGW should both count as London so I wouldn’t anticipate a problem doing it all on one companion voucher. You should also be able to book a combination of BA and IB, if there’s availability and you are using a new-style voucher (earned from Sep 21).

Yes, you can do this but you need to telephone to book. Both single open jaws and double open jaws are permitted, subject to the IATA mileage rule that no ‘surface’ sector can be greater than either flight or total of flights if there is a connection.

Enjoy! I did LGW-CAN and flew home MEX-LHR. 3 nights in Cancun/Valladolid, 4 nights in Oaxaca, 4 nights Ciudad de Mexico. But lots more to see in the country!

How wonderful! And you did that using an open jaw BA companion voucher ticket?

No voucher, just a straightforward online booking via BA’s website and comparing the total cost of the fare if I did either of LHR-MEX CAN-LGW and the other way around.

As others have said, as long as it complies with open jaw rules about distance between points it’s fine, you just need to book by phone. For example, this year we’re booked to use a companion voucher to fly from Gatwick to Orlando and then back from Boston to Heathrow.
