Hi,
I currently have a companion voucher with loads of time left on it and I just called AmEx to cancel by BA AmEx Premium Plus Card. Despite what the HfP site states I was told by the AmEx representative that I would 100% lose my companion voucher. I queried this (twice), but she point blank said “go do your research, you will lose the voucher”.
So, in the meantime I’ve downgraded to the classic card, but I want to double check the advice from HfP that I will NOT lose this existing voucher if I cancel the (now classic) card?
I also have an existing booking in September using a separate companion voucher, but she made no reference to existing bookings. I was fairly confident I understood the rules, but she was very convincing in what she said so bottled it and downgraded. Advice please!
Thank you.
Keith
People can only tell you what past practice has been, and on that basis the voucher would be fine, but that doesn’t mean that Amex or BA will never enforce the terms that say you need to pay with the card and remain eligible for the promotion at the time of travel.
BA / Amex are currently unable to cancel the voucher once issued. The risk of the necessary IT changes being made, and retro-applied to your voucher, are negligible and absolutely not worth paying the BAPP fee to avoid in my opinion. I cancelled mine after earning a voucher. However, they are within their rights according to the T&Cs to cancel the voucher if you cancel the card, so the call centre are advising you of this, even though it’s not currently the actual practice.
Hi memesweeper, sounds like you’re saying there are technical reasons why they can’t actually cancel the voucher, as opposed to them choosing not to enforce the rule. Is that correct?
I couldn’t actually find anything in the terms and conditions that state the voucher is cancelled if the card its cancelled. I found the rule that says you must pay the tax/fees using the card, which you obviously can’t do if you’ve cancelled the card. Is it implied by this rule, or am I just not finding the relevant section?
However, it is stated on HfP that the “you must pay the tax/fees on the card” rule isn’t enforced either! Just has to be an AmEx card.
I’ve downgraded anyway to save the fee, but I really want to start the clock ticking on the “you must not have a BA AmEx card for 24 months to get the sign on bonus” clock.

Yes, there’s plenty of people who have managed to pay with another person’s Amex (friend, family etc.) and so meet the requirement for the payment without holding a card themselves… where there’s a will there’s a way ! 🙂
Hello – considering downgrading as well as now that the Barclaycard Mastercard is on the scene, guess what, I’m not going to make a 10K spend on the AMEX. Does someone know if downgrading still keeps same Amex card number or is a new card/number issued. Thx.

I just downgraded my BA AmEx Premium Plus, and was sent a new card (the classic free one), but the card number has stayed the same.
