@AndrewT just be careful to make sure of the cancellation policies on the BAH one.

Yes I know you don’t get the same flexibility as a standalone booking, but it’s only £300 so the cost isn’t going to come down a huge amount in real terms, and worth the trade off for the double tier points.

So, 2 weeks in August 2025 to/from MIA trying (presidents club) with AWD K850800 all on Pay Later basis.

Avis UK, signed-in and providing AWD K850800 (so recognising Pres Club)
Ford Edge – Group W – £1348 – looks like no excesses at all

Avis.com, not signed in but putting in AWD K850800:
Ford Edge – Group W – $1575 + $424 fees = $1999 however excluding the following which add another $950 to the price
    – cover the car / LDW
    – Cover my liability / ALI
    – Cover myself / PAI
    – Cover my belongings / PEP

The UK site does not prompt for all of the excess / protection coverage at all and under excesses notes 0.00 DAMAGE EXCESS and 0.00 THEFT EXCESS. I just need to work out if I interpret this as “all included” or do I assume nothing is included but expect the big upsell at airport (and decline on basis of holding Plat card).

Yes that’s correct, all included, no upsell. And no hassle when you return, all minor damages ignored so unless you crash it properly you won’t have to fill in a damage report. They literally scan the barcode on the windscreen and you leave the keys on the dash and you’re done.

Thank you @davefl. I now need to work out what the minimum size class I can get away with for a family of four with 3 – 4 cases ideally in the boot (trunk)!

Kayak is throwing up some options on Turo – great pricing but looks like some sketchy car sharing marketplace I’d never heard of before.

Good to know the UK site pricing is all included but wasn’t expecting to pay that much for a car for a fortnight – oh well!

Appreciate your help – thanks again.

Turo has been around for years, it is very popular but I’ve never used it.

Be aware that what you book is unlikely to be what you get with any of the majors even of you pay a supplement for a specfic model (with Hertz for example). There’s no logistics in the background to say Mr Ukpolak is due at 9am so we’ll prep his Edge. You get what is ready.

I turned up at SLC in June with a 5 hour drive ahead of me to be told (after half an hour in the queue) that my wait for a Group C saloon would be indefinite and my only options were a minivan or a large pickup truck or to wait and see what came back. I ended up in a Hyundai SUV which I hated and which did around 14 miles to the gallon less than I’d budgeted for. That’a lot of extra gas on a 1600 mile drive.

That’s a great point – top tip thank you.

Interestingly enough, the cheapest options are pick-up trucks (like $600) alas I don’t own a cement mixer! My father-in-law used to have a Dodge pick-up in PA and I was always wary of our cases being in the open air, if we’d stop anywhere en-route to or from the airport.

I tried Hertz just now and Nissan Rogue (so Ford Edge equivalent) is $1449 / £1108 albeit no insurance protection included so I’d rely on my Platinum credit-card for cover.

I will take your advice and look for a “just large enough” car. I don’t think our mileage will be as much as on your trip but worth knowing what to expect when we arrive. Many thanks again.

@UKpolak I think you’re trying to book too early.

The advice to book what you can that’s cancellable and then keep checking back and rebooking as rates evolve is sound.

By all means secure a booking now that you can live with if you have to, especially as there are several of you travelling, but for many destinations it would be well under 6 months ahead before decent rates start appearing, and my gut feel is the time for that one might be from very late Jan/Feb at the earliest.

I had a booking for LAX 1 week. £235 with me logging in as a President’s club member.

I did the search again, logged in, with the code K850800 from a few messages above. New price is £205!

However the code does not work for the EU and JP bookings I have.

    Avis weirdness indeed.

You could try pricing it up as a BAH with one night in a hotel – might not make a huge difference to the price but you then get the BAH benefits.

We were really happy with Avis on our last US rental over Xmas & NY 2022. Prices were still silly after Covid so I booked a saloon (prefer SUVs for the elevated driving position but they were silly money) and on arrival at Key West we were given a Cadillac XT6, which I still dream about 😂

Not good advice due to the restrictive cancellation policy on BAH rentals

I would be most unhappy if they did this to me, c’est la vie.

Thought I’d wake this thread up as I know @davefl likes these.

Interesting proposition from Avis for a four day hire in Iceland. Standard Accident & Theft excess: ISK 1950. Four days optional vehicle cover to reduce the excess to zero: £72.

According to Google ISK 1950 = £11.05, so what they are saying is that I should take the optional cover if I think I’ll have seven accidents in four days!

Thanks @AndrewT I couldn’t be bothered with Avis’s shenanigans in Iceland so I walked across the car park to Blue Car Rentals insteaad. Sometimes the points/miles aren’t worth it.

Just about to start a resolver complaint. Been waiting 7 months for 4800 BW points. Every excuse under the sun, from we’ve sent the base poimts but you didn’t register for the bonus (when there was no registration process just a rate code), to “we can only send a query to the loyalty team every 90 days which is quite a surreal response.

I vaguely remember in the old avis app you could input airline frequent flyer number to collect avios in my case I credit to EI. I don’t see it as an option on new app?

In terms of finding best avis prices I’ve signed up up to presidents club via priceless.com with my WE elite card and always get better rate than anything I’ve seen on aer lingus or BA stores
