If you think BA’s IT is broken:
One way rental, SLC-LAS 12 days, Group C car, not logged in, specifying UK resident so insurance terms are the same:
CarhireBA portal – $3651 (no that’s not a typo)
Avis.com using BA silver AWD N744300 which should give the same result as the above – £739
Avis.com using AWD number K850800 and coupon number MUHA006 (Best Western up to 5000 points promo) – £699
Avis.co.uk – £832Bonkers!!! I shall be forgoing the avios and adding to my BW stash.
Whilst making that booking I got 3 different prices, £805 shown at the top of the screen, £792 on the total line, and then the confirmation screen and email show £768, but then they billed in USD, so I get stuck with the Amex forex fee. Nowhere did it say it would be billed in USD.
And it gets worse – My profile tells me that my password has expired (but it still works). Any attempt to update it on the password screen fails with “We are unable to process your request at this time.”
Then it tells me I need to update my credit card number as it’s expiring… every time I click that it tells me to update my password which I can’t, because my credit card number has expired.
The two remaining USA rates that I’m tracking have both dropped by 9% this morning. For those with BA Holdays they may find similar savings, or not… who knows.
Haha just tried this also …
~10 days in Japan:
– Avis.co.uk: Using my Avis preferred account JPY 61,000
– Avis.co.uk: using the different codes Dave disclosed JPY 70-82,000
– https://secure-one.avisworld.com/: using same avis preferred account and saying I am BA silver JPY 82,000So basically, just using your preferred account seems to be best
For me in the US, the BW code is the best by another 10% for one of them but that’s because telling the carhireBA site that I’m BA silver says no carss available but telling it I have no status is £30 more but there are cars available.
On every rental I’m tracking rates have changed at least every 3 days, sometimes more often. Example –
8/3 £278
24/3 £281
25/3 £244
2/4 £264
15/4 £303
27/3 238
15/4 £303
22/4 £315
25/4 £317
27/4 £300
29/4 £291
3/5 £300
7/5 £284Prices still dropping, £63 down in the last 2 weeks. Might be time to recheck your BA rentals again folks.
8/5 £262
9/5 £254Last 3 Avis rentals, all Chevrolet Malibu as a group C
1. No cruise control, wasn’t ordered as an option when Avis fleet purchased it.
2. All options present
3. No Airplay or Android Auto, not ordered as an option when they purchased itSo random.
Is there anyway of logging into the US Avis site with UK credentials?

Use the same Avis ID but do a password reset on the US site and you should get in. They have different password length requirements and not synced between UK and US sites.
@davefl Thanks but that didn’t work, it wouldn’t recognise my postcode or last 4 digits of drivers license.

Does changing your VPN location to the US work?
Avis are just shocking. I deliberately went through all the ID verification process, card on file etc before I left for the US and 3 rentals down and still not been able to just drive away. Had to queue at the preferred desk each time, only once was my name on the board (Seatac) and all it said was go to the desk. Each time it’s license verification and card swipe.
The $52 that the Willis Tower branch stole after my rental has been returned after complaining but I lost out by nearly £2 due to exchange rate movements.
Trouble is I won’t ever rent from Hertz again and Enterprise/National hate doing one way rentals and charge ridiculous surcharges if they’ll even do it.

I was fortunate in the I only had to go to the Preferred Desk the first time and since then, I’ve been able to go straight to car. I use the Avis app on the phone, allowed the app to get my location and to use mobile internet. I have an eSIM on the phone that is enabled when I land so Roaming is working – app status does change to show ‘proceed to car’ when I get close to desk. Not sure if any of these helps. I typically book via Avis UK directly (website and app) but this time, have tried via BA as part of a holiday, and entered my Preferred number on the BA site. The booking then showed up on my Avis app on my phone, but I can’t edit it (which is expected). I’ve just been asked to Confirm ID (a month before I travel) on app, just done it and Avis app now shows ‘ID Verified’.
I have my Amex Plat as the card on file and this is also where I get the President’s Club status from so again, not sure if that makes a difference – point in – with the above in place, I am able to go straight to car and agreement is emailed to me.
@vzzbuckz yes to all of the above, ID verified etc. Makes no difference.
The rental I’ve just completed, even though I had to go to the preferred queue, I didn’t even get a paper rental agreement, or one emailed after collection. No invoice after drop off either. They are a complete joke
I always find I now have to ask for printouts with Avis, as I don’t get the emails either contract or final invoice……but it does mean I have to go to the desk or kiosk etc.
4th rental in a row over the last 6 weeks and no ability to grab and go yet again. Turned up at SLC’s preferred counter 12.30 on a Tuesday and app just said error go to counter as usual, 7 people in the queue and no small cars. I’d ordered group C as usual and all they could offer people in front were large SUVs, a minivan or a pickup truck.
I stuck around for half an hour and eventually was given a Hyundai Genesis SUV which I absolutely loathe. It has bald rear tyres, only does 22 to the gallon (It’ll cost me at least $250 extra in fuel over the next 2 weeks over an Accord/Malibu) and is totally unsuitable for what I wanted.
Yet again no RA (as they’re a paperless site). Mileage on the app says it left SLC with 5 miles when it was over 12000. Appears from the App that Avis US have completely given up recording fleet mileage or condition any more as no condition reports are ever available.
This ought be renamed Dave’s Avis Rant thread. I wonder what Avis need to do to send you back to Hertz……
Others are welcome to rant here as well, and nothing, I’d rather walk.
Most of my rentals are one way and only Avis will do that without charging an absurd amount extra.
Not sure about that always being the case.
For sure, corporate codes often have one-way (at least in same country) baked in at no extra cost.
Hertz in US at least, most States I believe one way free of charge within the State.
In Europe, varying by country and over time, I’ve had some very reasonable one way drop fees from the majors
Cross-border it doesn’t work except with major cost though.

Sorry, I was referring to Avis USA only. Generally one way rentals are free in Florida and California due to statute, but I typically rent across many states.
Europe is a completely different kettle of fish and I typically (but not always) avoid the majors due to bad reviews for each franchise.
I am trying to book a rental from DFW and returning to IAH. I picked a Group G car priced at £517.68 for 13 days. When I click to the payment page the price exactly doubles to £1035.36. Am I missing something?

I don’t really understand, are you saying a glitch caused the price to double, or was this addition specified as being for the one-way? Were you logged in, did you use a discount code. Car rental is so random and price is dependant on so many things. Mathematicians struggle to generate random numbers, car rental companies seem to do it with ease.
Here we go again with nonsensical pricing.
For a 2 week one way rental from CPT-JNB. Avis is cheaper than Budget, and pay on arrival is cheaper than pre-pay.
Surely both of those should be the opposite way round?
