Hi – I’m trying to cancel an Avios flight for 3 of us this coming
Monday by phone, but no luck so far.
If I end up having to go for the voucher (the only option offered
on MMB), I understand the cash element will be in the voucher to use against any other flight,
but how does the Avios part work?
Obviously subjective, but would you say it’s so restrictive that it’s preferable to pay the GBP35/pax?
PS forgot to add, there a 2-4-1 voucher in there too, which would have expired by now: would I get that back and extended if I cancel for GBP35?
Hola Michael!
I’ve not seen anything about being able to use the cash on its own, though I suppose if you made a new booking where you used all the avios but had some cash left over it might then work like that if you kept the leftover cash in the FTV.
The avios in the FTV can only be used to make a booking where there is award availability, and the same passengers have to travel. Someone suggested keeping a record of all your attempts to call BA so that if you can’t get through to them before your flight departs, you are in a good position to still claim a refund as they have made it impossible to do this online.
Any chance your flight will be cancelled before Monday? This is the ideal scenario as you can then request a full refund online.
No – the 241 won’t be extended if it’s already expired, the only way to retain its validity is to put it in an FTV and hope, like me, that BA start answering the phones by the time you want to use it!

Don’t think it would be extended so lost. Best to just keep in FTV form. And when it comes to needing to redeem, call and redeem (bit more of a pain that online). Any leftover cash&avios will be returned to your account.
Thanks Lassie/Benny – will take the (for now!) easy way out!

Everything that you have ‘paid’ so far, cash and avios, is kept in credit to be used for a new booking. You can top up either if the new trip is more expensive, or get a refund of either if it is cheaper. It has to be the same type of booking – so that cash part is NOT available for a cash booking, only as part of a reward booking.
Yes, FTV looks like the best option to keep the 241 alive, unless you need the cash.
