Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club Avios to upgrade flight to Adelaide

  • 14 posts

I have an opportunity to fly to Adelaide later in the year. Economy tickets will be paid for by work, but I’d like to look into upgrading to business using a mixture of my own cash and Avios. I’ll be travelling with my wife (who shares my family account). Work is willing to contribute a similar cash amount to my own travel choice as economy would have cost.

I don’t have any airline status or BA vouchers. I have about 150k Avios and 350k Amex membership points. (I also have about 70k Virgin points and a Virgin card flight voucher if the options are better with those airlines.)

I know I don’t have enough points to get me there but I’d like to know if there are ways to get some value out of the points for upgrades and I don’t know enough about how it all works (my only reward flights in the past have been with BA companion vouchers which I no longer have).

Are you booking direct with the airline, or via a business supplied agent? In the latter case, you may find you can’t upgrade the ticket even if you wanted to.

Booking direct. It’s a small company and I’m a director so it’s just about how much the conduct company can justify as a business cost, but I can buy my own ticket and claim back on expenses to that value.
