…We have got their tablets all loaded up, colouring, play doh….
@meandthekids I speak from experience that you won’t be permitted to take Play Doh in hand luggage!
We did BA economy LHR-HND in December with a 3+7 year old. Turned out to be 17 hours on the plane due to de-icing followed by a technical problem that needed fixing but they didn’t de-plane us.
– We took two tablets and signed up for YouTube Premium free trial – this allows you to download videos in advance and they can watch it offline. Bring ear phones that fit your tablet. I forgot the new iPad doesn’t have regular headphone sockets.
Similarly for Prime/Disney+, download some videos they might choose to watch.
If you download any games, make sure they work offline. Many games need an internet connection. Puzzle games are good.
– With a 12yo, you might be OK but for younger children, consider taking turns on who looks after them. Take turns to sleep etc. Our 7yo could sleep in any position or lean against one of us. Our 3yo slept across my lap/seat and used my bag as a footrest. Pillows and stuff like that just means more to carry. Only get them if you really need it. The head rests have pieces either side of your head that fold out which I lean against.
– Make sure everyone keeps hydrated and goes to the toilet. I always bring my own water but they do give it later in the flight. Have snacks to hand. The in-flight meals don’t really fill me up.
– If you can’t sleep and it’s a smooth flight, stand up and walk about. Back of the plane is great to stretch and grab some snacks and maybe nice views out the emergency exits or chatting with other passengers/BA crew. Watch some movies or TV shows. 2 or 3 interesting films should eat away a big chunk of the flight time.
– Wear layers and light clothing so you can adapt to the cabin temperature. Sometimes the A/C is too hot or too cold and varies throughout the flight.
We had to fly BA economy to Tokyo and back in May. My wife and I usually fly Club but this time we had our two kids with us.
I was ready for the narrow seat and I booked extra legroom as I’m tall, but what I wasn’t prepared for was the thinness of the seat cushion, which had been compressed to what seems to have been a few millimetres of its life. So on both the outbound and return flights it was like sitting on little more than a metal frame for 14 hours. Very uncomfortable.
My top tip therefore is take your own seat cushion..
