I need to arrange – and foot the bill for – a drinks reception after the summer for clients and contacts who are predominantly in the City.
Will be about 40 guests in total. Does anyone have any inspired ideas of where to host this? In the past I’ve done wine bars or slightly smarter pubs like the three cranes, but with costs spiralling higher I’m just thinking someone might have a smart solution.
Need a private or semi private space and whilst inside the square Mile would be best, venturing just across the river or over towards Aldgate or out to Farringdon might be possible too.
All thoughts welcome but the idea is to find the value proposition, not the artisan rum and kombucha bar where drinks are served by waiters on roller skates.
Depends on the night of the week, there are some biggish restaurants near Farringdon which are emptyish early in the week.
The upper area of the conservatory of the Barbican Centre is perfect for a summer drinks reception. I’ve been a few times. When the free drinks are over the hardcore can adjourn to the Martini Bar or a local pub.
Do any of the roof top garden places like the Sky Garden have bar areas they can rent out.
Thanks all. Am pretty sure getting a space won’t be a problem with 4-5 months notice. The Barbican idea is nice but the space looks far too big so that will come with a commensurate price tag. There are venue spaces at the top of the Walkie Talkie but given what I paid up there for a couple of glasses of champagne about 6 years back, I’m saying that’ll be out of my league. Any thoughts on smaller restaurants that might not be open in the evenings to start with??
If you could venture as far as Picadilly area, the Karma Sanctum Soho London has a rooftop bar that may fit your requirements.
The Counting House has some fairly smart private (and public) spaces at pub prices.
Yes that’s kind of been the default option in the past – the table service on the balcony has been very good in the Counting House, but I was trying to come up with something a bit different – and Fullers prices are hardly cheap these days although I did see some interesting drinks packages being promoted in the Tokenhouse just round the corner this week.
I get invited to quite a few of these events and most are quite dreary/forgettable, even in expensive venues. I prefer events with something a bit different –

was one and there are a few other golf places of different types around the City. Nobody needs to be a golfer – everyone seems to have a go and it’s a talking point if the guests don’t know each other.
Well I always say Crosse Keys is the value Counting House…doubt they do events though.
St Ethelburga’s is relatively affordable by City standards, although you’d have to sort out your own catering. Not sure whether you could fit 40 in their tent.
