I suspect this has been covered before, but anyway….

    Booking Mad-Man economy, off peak
Iberia flights give these options using the 1p per avios. So least avios, most cash is the “cheapest”

    13500 Avios + £ 59.40=£194.4
    10500 Avios + £ 69.40=£174.4
    8300 Avios + £ 79.40=£162.4
    6000 Avios + £ 89.40=£149.4
    3800 Avios + £ 109.40=£147.4

However, looking at it from the point of view of “buying avios”, then 6000 +£89 is better, as being able to buy avios for ~0.5p seems pretty good to me
    13500 Avios + £ 59.40 = 1.3p
    10500 Avios + £ 69.40 = 0.67p
    8300 Avios + £ 79.40 = 0.6p
    6000 Avios + £ 89.40 = 0.56p
    3800 Avios + £ 109.40 =0.63p

So what do others tend to do?

Pay £40-ish cash?! Unless you’re going at an expensive time it makes much more sense to just buy a cash ticket via Iberia.

Oops. Forgot to say, they are prices for 2 people. The cash price was ~£150 each once hold luggage has been added.

I also forgot to add the most avios, least cash which was 15k + £40 = £190 (for 2 people)

Is that one way or return?

I don’t actually know if award flights on IB get a checked bag, as I’m currently relying on all the BA gold benefits!

Have you checked the days either side? Sometimes IN cash prices can spike on the odd day. Also BA charges a lot more for IB flights than IB website does, so always compare them.

If you’re set on using avios, I would go for the lowest avios/highest cash option, and you then have the option of cancelling for the relevant fee if you need to.

How did you derive these figures?

    @dmm27 your math is wrong.

Say you are considering the 6000 + 89.40 step. The next step down is 3800 + 109.40, so by going to that step you buy 2200 for 20 at a rate of 0.91.

If you are fine either way buying Avios at 0.91, then take 3800 + 109.40. If you would not buy at 0.91, then stay at 6000 + 89.40.

Repeat the above from the top.
