Amex Strategy

Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points
Hi all
I’m thinking about my Amex strategy over the next couple of years and would appreciate any thoughts / if I’m going to be extracting maximum value.
For context, I held Preferred Rewards Gold until 28 February 2020 (checked with Amex today and this was the cancellation date). I then lived abroad for six months, and when I came back in September 2020 I got BAPP, which I’ve held since. I now have two companion vouchers sitting in my account and I also have Avios Rewards through my Barclays Premier account and in April will have had that account for a year, so should soon be getting my upgrade voucher.
TL;DR – I have enough points-based vouchers to be getting on with for now.
My question is what I do next – my understanding is that I’m only eligible for a sign-up bonus on the platinum card by virtue of having held a BAPP in the last two years (I think that disqualifies you from the bonus on Preferred Rewards Gold?). I don’t really need all of the platinum benefits, so my thinking is to sign up for platinum, get the 30K MR bonus and then call Amex to drop down to Preferred Rewards Gold (which I think I’d be eligible for the free first year on, but obviously not a bonus), maybe even getting lucky and getting a retention offer on the platinum (though I won’t hold my breath, given I won’t have held it for very long).
Are there any major flaws or issues with this plan, or any way I can be extracting more value (I saw some mention of a 70K MR referral for the platinum – is that still ongoing and if so a link would be great!).
Thanks!
No flaws, makes sense.
