Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Forums Frequent flyer programs Other frequent flyer schemes AMEX points to Emirates Skywards or Qatar Avios

I am looking to fly from Scotland to Perth, Australia, in March. I have 48,000 Amex points. They aren’t enough for an upgrade but I was planning to use them for miles+ cash. Both Emirates and Qatar fly from Scotland and the price is similar on both airlines. Do you know if I would get a greater discount off the fare by converting to Avios or Skywards? I know you get more Avios points than Skywards but not sure the difference when converted to cash off the fare. Thanks for any advice.

I can’t comment on which scheme offers the better deal for miles+cash. If you are converting Amex points, both are a poor option. You’d be better placed using Amex points for something else, and the money saved can be used for flights.

An alternative approach might be to see where 48,000 Avios will take you in the direction of Australia — somewhere where flights to Perth might be cheaper, quicker or non-stop — and start your journey there.

I totally agree with the above. Avios can be used to completely pay for internal Australian flights (eg Perth to Sydney) using “Book a flight with Avios” on ba.com – plenty of guides on here to help.

For your flights, you may want to look at ex-EU flights (eg from airports like OSL, AMS, and all the German outposts) as this can be a much bigger saving vs flying directly from the airport you want.

48,000 Amex points could give you a weekend away with flights, or transfer to hotels for a couple of nights away. But using a stash of points to reduce the cost of flights is *always* a bad deal
