    My luggage was damaged between my Doha and London flight, one of the zips burst open and it’s now unable to move. I can technically close the case using one zip but it means I can’t lock it properly.

    I’m not sure Qatar or BA will entertain my claim (it was a Qatar reward flight I purchased from BA). I’m wondering if Amex platinum would cover it? It was bought for £200 and only used a few times. I’m just thinking that baggage must get damaged from rough handling often and hence I’m not sure if it’s covered, I can’t see any obvious exclusions? Obviously this isn’t just wear and tear but fundamentally affects the ability to properly close it.

    Anyone know?

    I’ve also applied to samsonite today now as it’s under warranty but I feel like they will worm out of any claim that may be wear and tear.

    It’s possible that Amex would cover it under the personal belongings section but they would usually require you to have claimed from the airline first. I am not sure why you assume QR would refuse your claim, but if they did, you can then make a claim to Amex. There is a £50 excess on that section.

    Reading through the T’s and C’s, Amex Platinum insurance only covers delayed baggage IF the flights were booked on the platinum card. Any ideas if this works on reward flights? Eg I’ve booked Rome for £70 (on the Platinum card) and a bunch of Avios – would I therefore be covered?

    Reading through the T’s and C’s, Amex Platinum insurance only covers delayed baggage IF the flights were booked on the platinum card. Any ideas if this works on reward flights? Eg I’ve booked Rome for £70 (on the Platinum card) and a bunch of Avios – would I therefore be covered?

    Yes, that issue is covered at 1.6(c) and any essentials you purchase under this section need to be paid on the card. For what it’s worth you don’t get anything to compensate you for the baggage delay itself, the insurance just covers reasonably incurred expenses for essentials and they would usually expect you to claim from the airline first.

    I bought a three set Antler case and have had to claim on two of them, one happily replaced by BA (their fault) and the second Amex platinum paid out because we dropped it getting off a train in Croatia. I do recall they asked whether it could have been covered by any other insurance, so I’d go with the airline first, but the experience I had was fine and the amount they paid covered a replacement case minus the £50 excess

    Are you sure that is correct? I thought you merely had to book with ANY American Express card? Would be a bit annoying to fall foul to this, especially after utilising flight offers saved to other Amex cards.

    Any putative libaility rests with the carrier of the last flight you took – so QR.

    When was the flight?

    You only have a limited time to report it to the airline. With BA for exampel it’s within 7 days of receiving the bag so check what QRs policy is. And then AMEX may have their own deadline for making a claim,

    @adm – I have used the terminology “the card” advisedly as that is what the terms state for this section. The broader terms then widen the scope of that term to other Amex cards. I would think it’s probably prudent, if claiming under this section to buy the essentials on the Plat card itself – not many points lost given the low cover offered and you will be paying FX fees whichever Amex you use.
