Well, I just checked against ITAsoftware (which is sadly going away). I tried Ethiad, QR, SQ and BA. There was no difference in the BA/QR pricing, a £10 discount for Ethiad and a 10% discount from SQ. So yeah, there is a savings sometimes.
It exists, but it’s a very weird program. You can find IAP rates via the Amex Travel portal. You’ll know them when they pop up as they are labelled as IAP rates as soon as your search results come up. They don’t apply to short haul, and start from premium economy only.
The problem with IAP is that it’s a ‘Black Friday’-style discount: It gives you a cheaper rate on a ticket that’s more expensive to book via Amex Travel to begin with. Amex will tell you that it’s not their fault and the fares are automatically generated by the global booking system that allocates fares from airlines to them. But it’s a fact that booking via Amex Travel will sometimes be more expensive than booking direct, even though the fare buckets are exactly the same.
This reduces the actual discount to something more like 5%, for the fares I was researching in the past at least.
Agree it’s very hit and miss. I’ve booked J tickets to BKK with EK for £130pp less than direct using IAP, which stacked very nicely with the spend £600 get £200 back AMEX travel offer. But for our trip to Bali, got only £20 off pp so just booked direct with QR. On average however, especially for BA flights to USA in J, I would say there is about a £50pp saving. Not sure I will bother using it during Covid however given the difficulties of using an OTA and changing flights.
