Before applying for the card I called Amex a few times to see whether the fee could be paid monthly instead of in one lump sum . Numerous times I was told yes and to call when receive first statement (I called via BA number as I have the free BA card ) so that it can be arranged
Well first statement has come showing the annual fee , I called Brighton twice to be told it has to be paid in full and it can’t be changed to monthly
Is there any redress or anything Amex can do … I’ve been with Amex since 2018 holding a different card
You can put in a complaint and hopefully you kept the call details from when you were told yes as it doesn’t sound like this was ever put in writing. It’s an odd one – several people on here got the monthly deal but when I enquired about it on chat they insisted it wasn’t even a thing and refused to budge! I cancelled the card shortly after so it didn’t matter but you’d think staff would at least know about it!
I’d go via chat (so it is in writing) and would suggest doing that in the future with anything like this sort of thing. You say you called them a few times so clearly you know this isn’t normal practice so getting it in writing would be prudent.
For now I’d contact them via chat to request it and if they refuse then reiterate that on {date} at {time} you called {number} and were advised it could be done monthly and that that was a significant reason for your deciding to apply for the card and would cause you hardship if they don’t allow it.
If they don’t budge you could raise a complaint but it is very unlikely to be resolved in the few days you have before you need to clear the balance of the card. The question then is do you really need it to be done monthly? Is it worth your effort? Presumably you can cover it (and are targetting the spend bonus), they still refund it pro-rata when you cancel.
Hi CarpalTravel when I called prior to opening the charge card account I would always call through my BA Amex and would of hoped that the convo was recorded in the notes, whether it has or not who knows. I’ve called back and this particular agent said will send to the back office to investigate and will get a response in 7-10 days however no guarantees . I don’t owe anything on the card, Just the fee , which I prefer to pay monthly if possible
All calls to Amex are recorded so they will be able to look back at the call and confirm what you were told. The Retentions team should also be able to sort the monthly fee change for you as this is one of the options they offer to stop people cancelling.

Ah that is excellent! My response was based on the assumption you were just a member of Joe Public calling a number to ask a question, having gone via your account changes everything! Yes all calls were recorded and if you felt so minded, as part of GDPR rules you could ask for them all to be transcribed for your literary pleasure! You should be on very solid ground then with this.
{Note, they may try and charge a small fee for this}
