I haven’t had gold card since 2019 so think it’s time to open one of these. Husband as sent me a referral link. I currently have BAPP.
I know there’s sign up bonus on platinum card (65,000 for £595 plus the benefits) and gold card is 22,000 (free in first year). What would be your recommendations for the best card to take out? Also is there a difference in the referral amount that my husband would get?
If you’ve got a BAPP you won’t get the Gold referral, so I’d suggest going for Plat
Your husband would get the same points no matter which card you took, but as per above, you would only get the bonus on the Plat.
They really are totally different cards, so it depends what you want to use it for and/or your circumstances. Platinum has travel insurance (as long as you aren’t excluded by any pre-existing conditions) plus the car hire excess insurance and various other benefits including the £150 x 2 dining benefit that effectively hands back half of your fee. Against that, the earning of 1MR/£1 is poor and the additional apparent benefits like FHR, car hire discounts/status are a bit sketchy. For some the hotel status benefits may be useful. The gold has fewer benefits but higher MR earning with bonuses at £5k spend threshold and on airline and foreign spend. It’s free in Y1 but in later years, for some the Deliveroo benefit largely covers the fee. It’s not really an either/or.
