I’ve just seen the new set of events on the Amex Platinum Experiences. I’ve seen previous ones such as art gallery openings or boutique/designer brand events that are complementary for card members, but never been.
What are people’s experiences of these? Are you expected to buy something? Given the hard sell? Or can you just go for an interesting evening of browsing “rich people stuff” and interesting presentations without being/feeling shamed?
Also watch the cancellation fee, i think it is £75 if you book it but not show up
Having done loads of these in my time – albeit mainly not with Amex – it is very much the latter. Zero attempt, literally zero, to sell you anything, although you may be offered a discount if you do. The assumption is that letting you spend an hour or so in the store, with a few drinks too, may make you more amenable to them.
Usually decent goodie bags too.
I once went back to Bulgari and bought a belt I saw when at a similar event (still got it, it refuses to die about 15 years on!). They are also in it for the long term – you may not be able to afford a Panerai now, but perhaps you will in 5 years.
