Forums Payment cards American Express American Express 2nd cardholder bonus

  • 2 posts

If you already have not done so sign up a family member, partner etc to have a secondary card, you will get 2000 points. This applies to the first supplementary cardholder only .

I got my points within 2 days which is brilliant.

Never do this at point of applying for the card. Once you have the primary card follow this link, bonuses vary by card

Still waiting for the supp bonus and I guess will give it 90 days before calling in

My wife got Platinum and Rewards card within a month of each other. Added me as a supp on both within days of receiving the card. 2000 MR for Rewards card turned up after a couple of days. 5000 MR for Plat – which we got weeks earlier, are still missing. As others have said. “Wait 90 days”, then complain when nothing has arrived, then request a “good will” gesture for having to have contacted AMEX because of their shocking IT.

I’m in same boat but read somewhere (T&Cs) that you can only receive this supp bonus one time only (lifetime)

I signed up my wife for Supp Platinum the day my card arrived (2 weeks ago). 5,000 MR points were posted in my account a day after acceptance – before the supp card arrived.

I’m in same boat but read somewhere (T&Cs) that you can only receive this supp bonus one time only (lifetime)

The T&C read: “You may apply for several Supplementary Cards but you will only receive the x,000 membership Rewards points for the first approved Card. You will not receive this bonus if you have ever received it before”.

So, theoretically, if you’d had the Plat, added a supp, got the supp bonus, cancelled. Then re-applied for the Plat and added a supp, you wouldn’t be entitled to another supp bonus.

In practice, I’m certain Amex IT couldn’t identify this (my dad has had the Rewards card for a couple of years now and got the generic advert “add a supp, get a bonus”. He was pretty certain my mum had been a supp in the early period he had the card but he subsequently cancelled her supp card (don’t ask!); when he asked Chat, they couldn’t tell him either way if he’d had a supp before or not, just kept quoting “you don’t have a supp card, so if you apply for a supp you’d be eligible for the bonus”.

“You will not receive this bonus if you have ever received it before”.

I suppose this could be interpreted as “ever… in this current iteration of your account”, rather than “ever in the history of your relationship with AMEX”, to stop people getting a supp bonus, cancelling the supp card, adding a new supp card, getting a new bonus, cancelling the supp, etc… but who knows!
