Hi folks
Maybe not the right forum, but I’m sure some help will be here and my question will be answered.
Holidays coming up fast, and I got an email from Alaskan regarding our flight to lax from LAS. The flight times have been changed (basically the midday flight we were booked on was cancelled and they’ve moved us to a different one same day. However that flight means a stopover just shy of two hours at LAX before our flight on BA back to London.
I’ve spoken with them and they’re happy to cancel that leg of our booking without any hassle. I can book on a southwest flight for the same cost easy enough that gives 4 hours layover.
What’s people’s opinions on whether 1hr 50 is suitable or if it’s better to swap to the Southwest flight and enjoy the Lounge at LAX for a bit first. I’m just worried that even a small delay could make that flight more stressful.
I don’t know the answer to your question, but one factor that may or may not sway your decision is that southwest don’t allocate seats – you get on the plane and see where you end up.
How many separate bookings are we talking about here? This would have a huge bearing on what I would do in these circumstances.
For a 70 min flight, the missus and I are happy to sit where ever.
A bit of a bodged together holiday.
The Alaskan booking is Washington, SFO, Hawaii, and Vegas to lax. End of the day, it’s really the short layover now. When we booked, we had 4 hrs, now the changes mean 1hr 50.
We have lounge access for Bus Class on BA plus the platinum card, so sitting at an airport for a few hours doesn’t bother us, it’s really just ensuring 1hr 50 is long enough. All that takes is a half hour delay at LAS, and you’re screwed really. That’s my worry. In fairness Alaskan are being decent about it, and Southwest have seats at the same price as the refund I’ll get.
Can you use the lounge if your next flight is not a OW carrier? (also is it the same terminal at all?)
Sure the terminals are different, hence my worry.
Lounge is fine, landing on whatever airline (southwest or Alaskan) but my LAX – LHR flight is BA, so I get the lounge either through that or through my Amex Plat Card. I think, given the costs are the same, it might be wise to book the Southwest one and cancel the Alaskan final leg.
@hmltnangel I’m trying to make sense of what tickets you have (reading it as LAS-LAX on Alaska, and then connecting to BA to the UK on a seperate ticket) but I think from what I read above you’ll have to collect and recheck your luggage from the Alaska to BA connection so 1hr 50 isn’t enough as you’ll be close to the luggage cutoff, (recommmendation is always 3 hours ahead for an international flight)
It’s also a fair walk from terminal 6 to terminal B, or on the connector bus it’s going to take 20-30 mins with waiting time.
Sorry, if it got a bit muddled somewhere in there.
LHR – IAD on BA
IAD – SFO – HNL on Alaskan
HNL – LAS on Hawaiian
LAS – LAX on Alaskan
LAX – LHR on BA
It’s the LAS – LAX one where the problems come from. They changed flights/times so our stopover is short now. I almost always allow 3 hrs, but now we’re way less.
@davefl that’s exactly what I needed to know though. Thanks. I’ll speak to Alaskan and cancel, then rebook through Southwest with a near 4hr layover instead.
