Good morning, i booked 2 Air Alaska flights for an upcoming trip to the USA . I booked them through BA and used avios point for the flights.
It was only after i booked that i noticed that there was no checked luggage included. I bit annoying but the taxes were super cheap so i though it all balances out in the end.
The flight is about 30 days away now so i was looking to see it i could check in , add baggage etc. On the BA site it says that i cant change the booking in anyway and that i can ‘add baggage at the airport for a fee’. My understanding of adding a bag at the airport is its always more expensive.
I have an Air Alaska account so i thought i could link the bookings and check in that way , it asks for a 10 digit eticket reference number but the one from BA doesnt seem to work.
Anyone ever had a similar problem with how to check a bag in ?
Where are you flying from? I’ve never used Air Alaska but other US carriers tend to include checked bags on long haul, but not short haul/domestic routes.
If it is like, e.g. American Airlines baggage policy for checked bags, the only option is to add at the airport and pay the set fee then, though this is unusual in UK airports, which is why I’m wondering what your routing is!
I’m sure @Scottydogg means Alaska Airlines.
Use the chat function on here https://www.alaskaair.com/content/about-us/help-contact/contact-us and they’ll be able to give you the Alaska PNR. You’ll be able to use MMB on their website and add your luggage and check in directly with them
You need to contact Alaska Airlines with your BA ticket numbers, they will then give you their booking reference. Baggage isn’t included unless you have status but I was able to select seats for an upcoming flight, well away from any doors! I think you can add baggage a few days before?
I know it’s Alaska – I was just citing comparisons with other US carriers on baggage policy, it’s unusual that it’s not included on a long-haul flight (if that is what this is).
If by long haul you mean TATL, they don’t. Alaska only fly to destinations on the north american continent + Mexico & Belize and Costa Rica.
@Scottydog, you raised this in Jan https://www.headforpoints.com/forums/topic/air-alaska-baggage/
Rob also covered this in an article – https://www.headforpoints.com/2021/04/01/you-can-now-book-alaska-airlines-avios-flights-online-and-earn-tier-points-with-them/ Free baggage is for OW status holders only
RE: My understanding of adding a bag at the airport is its always more expensive.
Not in America, the wild west of baggage.
Most USA carriers have stuck with a simple ‘$XX for first bag, $XX for second bag’ for an age.
Quite common to only be able to pay for this at the desk.
Common for Americans to expect to have an outrageous size of carry on.
Common for the airlines to be very hot on hold baggage weight (50lbs).
Well I was wondering, which is why I was asking! OP says flight “to the USA”, so with that in mind, presumably is originating in one of the countries you mention?
Presumably then, you arrive with your bag, check it in and pay the fee at the same time, i.e. normal procedure for such flights. Sounds like OP hasn’t done this before, so I was just pointing this out.
Alaska used to have a relatively unknown exception for flights taken within something like 12 or 24 hours of an international arrival. I don’t know if they still do, but Alaska’s customer service is usually good so if you are connecting from, say, a BA transatlantic flight, it could be worth asking them about this.
Also I don’t think you mentioned whether you have BA or OneWorld status, but even BA Bronze should give you 1 or 2 free bags on Alaska.
I had a similar situation during a west coast trip booked with cash via BA,
I called to add an Alaska internal flight to my itinerary from LAX to LAS and LAS to SFO. Ba declined to add as I have 2 x 32kg allowance per pax on my ba J flights, but alaska would not add these bags. DEspite not even using the full baggage allownace for all pax.
I eneded up grabbing separate (cheap) reward bookings for 5 pax and had to take the hit of buying the check bags at the airport.
In the end, the Alaska check in agent at LA noticed I had silver status and checked 2 bags for free. The remaining bag wasn’t as expensive as I thought, but I can’t completely recall the exact cost.
Thanks for the replies , we are actually doing 2 Alaska Airlines flights , Las Vegas to Seattle , then Seattle to San Francisco .
So looks like i will just have to pay on the day , we have 3 bags and no status unfortunately. Looking like $35 per bag and we have 3 backs to check. a bit annoying not having one checked bag included
