Forums Other Flight changes and cancellations help Aegean lhr-Ath-cfu delay led to miss connection

  • 7 posts

On 20/5 I was flying with Aegean via athens to Corfu. Booked direct with Aegean who gave me a 40 min connection time at athens. I had booked mobility assistance. The flight to athens was delayed before boarding by approx one hour. Once onboard we left the gate but was put on stand for approx a further hour. We arrived into athens approx 8pm instead of 5.50pm. On arrival I received a text saying I had missed my connection and put on the first flight following morning. The aircraft was on stand, and it took approx one hour to get me to the terminal and help desk. I was given overnight accom with meals at the airport Sofitel.
I finally arrived in Corfu the following day at 08.25am.

On 20/6 I put in a claim to Aegean for eu compensation for the delay and missed connection. Having read the rules the time of delay is for the overall journey, so at least 12 hrs.

I struggling to find out why the flight was delayed, on top of the late arrival of the inbound aircraft. Even with the basic one hour delay at start, their is no way I would have made my connection – especially with assistance. I have put that on the info with the claim.

As of this date Aegean have made no contact whatsoever (tho I’m aware claims can take up to 60 days). I checked one of the online companies who will do your claim for a fee, and they immediately came back saying Aegean is notorious in refusing claims.

Any help and advice gratefully received.
    Thanks
    J

Was that the 12:15 flight? If so, we were on the same flight. I remember the reason for delay was ATC restrictions above German airspace.

40min connection usually works for ATH.

    Hi Chag
Thanks so much for your response – much appreciated.
I must have missed that announcement.
I would guess a 40 min connection would work if on time and a jetway, but on a stand? And mobility assistance?

Anyway – thanks again and hope you enjoyed your holiday

Yes, agree that there is no room for error with 40min.

I also missed my connection that day. Flew the same flight a week later and again the same restrictions with ATC…

From outside Schengen you always arrive into ATH by bus, and have to go landside then upstairs to redo security if continuing within Schengen.

These German ATC restrictions will continue for a while yet. They are due to flights to Asia not overflying Russia, and therefore causing congestion over central and southern Germany rather than going via the northern edge of Germany or Denmark.

    Apols for delay in responding.

Again apologies for delay in responding.

Would you agree or not their is a claim against Aegean under the EU delays/cancellation?

Sorry to hear you have had the missed connection problem with Aegean more than once

@odieuk Aegean did at least provide you with your ‘right to care’ hotel/food upfront which is good. For the delay compensation, they don’t participate in a UK arbitration so it’s a matter of chasing them, MCOL or using one of the claims firm that can pursue them in Greece but take a big cut of the €400 per pax. There is a risk they will cite the German ATC restrictions as ‘extraordinary circumstances’ whichever route you take.

If the cause of the delay was down to ATC then there is no compensation claim against Aegean.

It’s good they provided duty of care for you though. Some airlines would have made you aort that out yourself and claim it back from them!

ATC restrictions – definitely no claim under current regulations.

Thanks guys each of you for your responses – appreciate that.
I know you say it was ATC, but what I don’t know is whether thd inbound flight was delayed due to atc.

As Chag was affected on same flight down to athens I was, I now know that flight delay was an ATC.

I missed this earlier, but I don’t think this is quite correct. I’ve flown to ATH plenty of times (both A3 and BA) and I’d say 95% of the time we’ve gotten a gate. I’ve had a remote stand and bus a couple of times, but certainly not more than that. You’ll see several non-Schengen routes parked on gates too, with big birds from the Middle East, US, Canada attached to jetties…
