Forums Payment cards Barclaycard Avios Additional Barclaycard as a sole trader

  • 18 posts

    Afternoon,

I’m in the process of setting up as a sole trader and would like to optimise my Avios earnings on my Barclaycard Avios Mastercard.

I will have a combination of employed and self-employed income.

I’ve had the card as a personal customer for many years but I wonder if I can have an additional card in my own name for the sole-trader expenses?

My accountant has suggested a separate bank account to make record keeping easier – I’m planning on having a second Premier Account for this but would like to earn Avios on all work spending.

    Any ideas are welcome!

    Thanks!

@Aaron C – best not to ask. The Barclays Avios cards are for personal use only. It’s up to you how you interpret that and up to Barclays whether/how they apply the terms.

Your card is for personal use, and not for business purposes. Any purchases made for a business purpose don’t qualify for Avios. We may adjust your Avios balance at a later date if we find that a purchase has been made for business purposes.

As, except for historical exceptions, Barclaycard currently only allow one card per person the answer to a second card has to be No, regardless of usage.

Nothing wrong in principle with putting some business related expenses through a personal card, and then claiming it back from yourself if you want to operate a separate bank account. I haven’t checked, but I suspect the Premier current account is also not intended for business use, so it’s a question of proceeding with care, not asking Barclays the wrong questions, and not obviously doing anything they might consider ‘unusual’.

    Thanks both.
