Long time lurker on the forums! Love it here 🤗
I’ve been gradually collecting points over the years. I’ve managed to rack up 800k Virgin points, 450k Avios, and 250k with Amex.
The issue is… I have no idea how to spend Avios!
Virgin is pretty simple, with plenty of options to spend. I travel so infrequently that I’d prefer to splash out on business/first when I do.
However, with BA… I’m hitting a brick wall constantly!
I’ve used SeatSpy.com and all the rest, but can never manage to book a flight in first. And as you can pretty much only spend your points on flights (unlike Virgin), I thought I’d ask how everyone else was doing it….?
I really dislike the no-direct-aisle-access-guaranteed in BA’s business (crazy to me), but can’t figure out how to lock in on first. The website is so buggy, it feels as though it’s purposefully difficult so that you don’t spend points!
I’ve tried several times over several years and ultimately give up… Any advice?
Thank you!! 🙂
Try https://www.flighttimecalendar.com/flights/ba/CPT/LHR – It looks like the days in red are the ones where 1st is available. Not all routes have 1st.
BA doesn’t guarantee to release any award seats in F, however you can find them quite often to a limited number of destinations such as NYC.
SeatSpy does show what availability there is, though (but you need to double check on ba.com because it’s not 100% accurate), so I’m not sure why it’s not working for you.
You can actually spend avios on lots of things, though the value often isn’t very good.
Lol thank you for all (and I do mean all!) your replies and help!
Sainsbury’s and Argos is the way forward 🍷
Why first? Many people who have experienced both First and Club Suite say there’s not much difference in the hard product and going First limits your destinations a lot. Go somewhere from Heathrow avoiding A380s and you’re most likely to get Club Suite.

I wasn’t joking about petrol… if you need to use petrol, it is a good redemption. Better than on Sainsbury’s shopping itself, as you can get 7% off on that with gift cards.
