Forums Hotel loyalty schemes Hilton Honors $828 cash rate – only $400 to buy entire points needed for redemption

I just found this a bit weird – so wanted to question if this kind of thing is normal with Hilton Honors.

I was looking for a room at the Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas, stopping for a Friday night whilst I’m passing through Vegas.
That night in particular – the standard room rate was coming up at $828 in cash, or 80,000 in points.

I was therefore able to buy all 80,000 points under the bonus promotion for $400 and book the room solely on points – saving $428.
Even if there wasn’t a bonus promotion on points – it still would saved me money to buy points and book the room.

Does this sort of stuff happen regularly?
I’m intrigued – because if so, then I’ll probably keep a closer eye on it to try and save myself some cash in future!

    Yes, it does happen sometimes

The whole arbitrage of points vs cash is what keeps this game interesting.

Rob did an article a while back – IIRC he bought points for a very expensive stay in Dubai and saved a load of money.
You need to factor in though, the points you would have earned from the stay, and is the cash rate artificially high for some reason (e.g. is there some massive convention in Vegas that weekend)

There’s a maximum number of points you can buy per year even without the 100% / 80% extra points promo, so you can’t do it for a really extended period without messing about with multiple Hilton accounts, which may trigger some fraud detection.
