Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points
Hi all,
I have an 8 hour layover in Toronto during the day, and I don’t think I can cope with sitting in a PP lounge for that long. I’m planning to head into the city for a few hours.
Does anyone have any advice, or suggestions of things to see and do in that brief time? Bonus points for any Platinum dining credit restaurants you can recommend, ideally that are close to Union Station, as Toronto is the only place I will be visiting in the second half of next year with restaurants on the list (there are none in Panama and Costa Rica, where I’ll be spending my summer holidays).
TIA!
For a daytime layover that long I would consider getting a hotel room for a few hours during the day from a site like Dayuse. Somehwere to drop hand luggage, have a quick lie down and have a private shower is always nice, and rooms for a few hours are surprisingly cheap. Avalibility is normally only shown a few months before though so you may need to wait to book something.
The St Lawrence Market is a great food market, going up CN tower can be enjoyable if you’ve never done it. You could watch a Blue Jays home game if the dates and times work for you. Kensington Market is a cool neigbourhood to check out. The Aga Khan Museum and the Onario Art Gallery are both worth looking at if you like museums.
If you want (only) slightly less obvious things to do, the Allan Gardens Conservatory is lovely, ‘Little Canada’ is surprisgly good, Casa Loma is a castle museum in the heart of the city, and the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library is impressive.
Toronto is a big city with pleanty to do, just depends what you’re looking for.
No platinum dining credit reccomendations from me unfortunatly.
Thanks for this @kaconym, I suspect I might end up visiting a large number of these (as many as I can, while safely getting back to the airport in plenty of time!). That’s great!
@Cat I second visiting Casa Loma (it has featured in quite a lot of Hollywood movies) and going up the CN Tower. They are not close to each other though. Or just go for a walk around the harbour area or take a ferry to Centre Island for a bit of nature and skyline views back across Lake Ontario. Or a left-field idea – if you fancy it you could rent a car at Pearson Airport and drive to Niagara Falls – it will take 1.5 hours to get there and the same time back.
@Cat For Amex Dining credit, wherever you end up, please don’t try Canoe. They are truly the definition of overprice. Trying something else in the list!
I also agreed with @AJA that you could do the Centre Island (we enjoyed it very much back in September) and CN Tower. Try to avoid Uber / Lyft as well as traffic can be quite bad in / out.
However, Niagara Falls is a bit of a stretch in my opinion and you will end up spending lots of time in the car. Enjoy!
