Forums Frequent flyer programs British Airways Club 777 or A380 from JNB

Booked 4 club world flights lhr-jnb for next July. The return is released in a few days. I have 2 questions about the return flight:

    1) There are 2 flights, one on a 777, one on an A380. Is one better than the other?

    2) I have enough avios to book online and call for refund of avois if necessary. It will require 2 bookings as using vouchers from 2 different people. Both people will be present when making the booking. Do you think it will be better to
    A) book online and call up for refund.
    B) one person call and book the seats in 2 different bookings (we are both nominated people on each others accounts)
    C) both call separately and book.
    Thanks.

If it’s the old CW seat on the 777, and you book an upstairs seat on the A380 then that’s the winner – it’s a much quieter aircraft than the 777 and the window seats upstairs have side storage and the toilets at the front are huge. If it’s the 777 with the Club Suite, then that’s probably preferable, although I still prefer A380 as an aircraft.

I agree with Andrew on aircraft. As much as I dislike 777s I’d probably put up with it for CS over CW.

On booking, is there any reason why Player 3 cannot be in your HHA? That would allow you to do everything online. I don’t recall anybody trying this with two separate bookings for the return and then calling for voucher application and adjustment. I’d be surprised if they allow it. Remember that you can transfer up to 27,000 avios between accounts now for a flat £15 fee if that helps.

Thanks for the info on plane choice. A380 it is.
All 4 people are in out HHA, but I have one voucher and my husband another, so I thought it had to be 2 separate bookings. I was wondering if the consensus was to book online and call to apply voucher and refund avios, or call the US at 1am.

Sorry @polb, I overlooked that it was booking for 4 so obviously two vouchers. Thdre is a thread on exactly that so it mught be worth a look. I cannot recall if Cape Town is one of those destinations that benefits from biiking online and calling for an adjustment so others will advise. However given the popularity of route and need fir four seats I think an online option T-355 might be best.

Yes it will have to be 2 bookings if you each have a companion voucher even if you are in a HHA. The concession to allow the use of 2 vouchers on one booking is when you have 2 vouchers in your name.

I definitely would choose the A380 over the 777.

the 777 on Joburg is a 3 class bird which are all CS now which vs the A380 would probably swing it for me, especially if I didn’t have status and had to pay for seats (which is a significant cost for 4 people) as you really don’t need to bother with that on a CS bird whereas not doing so on an A380 could see you sat somewhere not ideal!

I’m yet to fly CS but having done LHR-JHB and back twice in 10 days, one trip in F and one in CW, I really can’t see any basis for booking the A380 over the 777.

You should get CS on the single deck, which will offer far better protection from galley FM than I got in 53K…

There are two indications for calling at 1am when booking T-355
    1. Lower taxes/charges when the tickets are priced as a return Vs two one ways (this is not the case for JNB).
    2. Popular destinations during their respective high seasons (eg MLE, SYD). Hopefully should be ok for you as it’s winter in SA when you are travelling.

Would agree with @BJ online at 1am probably sensible in this scenario & request refund of Avios later. If you are keen, perhaps both voucher holders stay up to book at 1am avoiding the time lag unless you are able to operate two computers simultaneously!
