My daughter just flew on one PNR LHR/DOH/SGN leaving LHR on Monday. They sat on the tarmac for two hours and were told it was due to air traffic delays over Hungary. They arrived DOH too late for the connecting flight. Qatar paid for a hotel and food and they were put on the DOH/SGN flight 24 hours later. So arriving 24 hours late and missing an internal flight that was with a separate airline.
Are they entitled to any compensation or is it extraordinary circumstances?
It was a cash ticket if that makes any difference.
Thanks in advance.
@Annie – the entitlement to compensation will depend on whether the initial delay was indeed due to ATC restrictions, but it is quite possible that the reason is genuine, in that there have been very significant ATC problems in the last week or so over Central Europe and the East Mediterranean affecting hundreds of flights. The onward flight from HCMC with another airline wouldn’t be the responsibility of Qatar but might be covered under insurance. Qatar appears already to have complied with its rerouting and ‘right to care’ obligations in providing a hotel and food plus rebooking on the next flight.
