American Express and Hertz have a long standing partnership that gets American Express Preferred Rewards Gold cardholders extra benefits when renting a car.

We cover the car hire element of The Platinum Card quite often on Head for Points, because the benefits are strong. Platinum comes with free car hire insurance, Hertz Plus Gold Rewards Five Star status and an intriguing Hertz deal where you last rental day counts as 28 hours long.

Today I want to look at the Hertz benefit for Amex Gold cardholders in detail.

We looked at the full list of American Express Preferred Rewards Gold benefits in this article.

What are the benefits of the Hertz / Amex Gold partnership?

The Hertz / Amex Gold landing page on the American Express website is here.

These are the benefits on offer:

  • 10% off best available rates at participating locations worldwide
  • One car class upgrade for rentals of five days or more, subject to availability
  • Additional driver fee waived

Car rentals in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Taiwan are excluded from the offer. Rentals within Japan are eligible for a reduced discount of 5% and a complimentary additional driver but no vehicle upgrade.

How to save 10% on Hertz car rentals with Amex

To make use of the discount you must enrol in Hertz Gold Plus Rewards via the American Express portal here.

If you are already enrolled in Hertz Gold Plus Rewards you must add the CDP code #705500 to your profile.

To complete the offer you must also register a valid American Express Preferred Rewards Gold card as the form of payment in your Hertz Gold Plus Reward membership profile.

Once registered you can book car rentals on the Hertz website or on the phone to receive your discount and benefits.

Existing bookings are not eligible for the offer, but if you haven’t pre-paid it is worth checking whether cancelling and re-booking will save you money.

The additional driver benefit may be more valuable

In truth, there are plenty of Hertz discount codes available via various travel partners. This article covers the Virgin Atlantic and Hertz partnership. You can also earn Avios with Hertz if you book via the Qatar Airways code.

The ‘additional driver’ benefit DOES offer real value for a couple. It is harder to get this for free and it can be laughably expensive.

I always fail to see the justification for charging for this at all, since alternating long drives across two people should be safer and something to be encouraged.

The upgrade benefit has no real value

Different people treat car rental upgrades in different ways. If you need a certain size car because of your luggage requirements, you need to book it in advance. You can’t rely on an ‘if available’ upgrade.

Some people are also unhappy driving larger cars than they are used to, especially when it comes to parking. An upgrade can be a problem at times.

In any event, irrespective of how you booked or your status with the car rental company, you are far more likely to be get an upgrade when renting compared to flying or checking into a hotel.

Conclusion

The Hertz benefit is a relatively low-key part of the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold package.

The 10% discount is nice to have if you can’t find a better deal – although you probably can – but the real value seems to be in the ‘free additional driver’ benefit.

PS. Remember that Avis offers a ‘free additional driver’ to anyone who books via the British Airways portal here.

I used to use the amex car hire benefits..
I was sucked in via president status etc..
I then found car flexi… much cheaper and would rather keep the last minute cancellations and changes from car flexi than any upgrades from amex partnerships..
I book the car i want through car flexi, get the category I want and don’t need to fret about getting upgrades via status at the desk..
Plus I can keep checking prices and cancel and rebook if the price goes down..
    A win win

And clearly I still get the insurance coverage for nothing extra..

This is very timely as I have to look into booking a rental in Brisbane, Australia. Does the Amex Platinum car hire insurance remain valid whether you book with that card or not? Also, can the additional driver be someone in tut USA or does it need to be someone or family member in the UK? I have never rented a car abroad but have heard often rental is cheaper but insurance is very high. Do I need to pay for additional insurance with rental company if I already have Platinum.

Lastly, is Hertz a good option in Australia re pricing or do people use other companies in Australia or websites like booking.com. Thanks.

No you do not have to pay with the UK Platinum card to get the insurance – this is different to the US Platinum Card. The wording in the Amex documentation is terrible, so you might need to call Amex to check on the supplementary driver.

We just got back from Brisbane, so a few words of warning:

carflexi.com seems to be offering good prices but I didnt know this site when I booked. I booked through booking.com to “bargain rentals” which is an offsite provider. They had a good price for late March, and their shuttle from the airport was frequent enough. Be warned, there didnt seem to be many petrol stations neart the airport, so fill up ASAP on your last day.

Hertz can be a good option especially with your “Presidents” status, but they normally price much higher than the local independent companies. Shop around!

ALSO if you are driving in Brisbane city, there are a couple of tunnels with tolls that avoid a lot of city centre traffic. Your car will likely have an automatic toll payment token that is paid by your hire company, and then billed to your credit card plus a chunky fee. Check when you pick up the car!!

Thanks. This is very useful. Doesn’t Platinum give Gold Hertz status or is it President’s Circle.

I used this benefit for the 1st time in Catania, Sicily last week …. Oddly after I left the Airport I noticed they had included a 2nd driver charge of €84 ! When I eventually got to speak to ( two ) differnt employees in bookings and back at Catania Aiport they told me that “ your 2nd driver HAS TO BE YOUR WIFE OR SON !!!!!! “ after much debate and heated argument about discrimination they agreed “ on this occasion only “ to waive the fee !?!
Not sure I’ll be using them again if I can’t include my partner on any holiday booking

  • A270 says:

For people with platinum, after getting Hertz status, do you book on Hertz website or via the Amex Travel portal? Also is the Gold Amex code #705500 stated here valid for Platinum card too?

  • yonasl says:

On the comments about the wife/partner. Hertz gives that benefit for free if you sign up to Hertz Gold and under every tier (even the lowest one). So getting the Amex for that may not be worth it if you just plan to add your wife/partner. However, if you travel with other family members or friends you will need the benefit Amex gives you.
